i heard from a guy that in 72 motors were built with a steel crank and 72 was the last year steel cranks were used. i wanted to know if this is true. i bought a 350 engine with casting number 3970010. he told me it was bored 30 over and it has badges with "built right" on them it also has a edelbrock performer intake manifold. there is a riser between the manifold and carb. i was wondering if anyone can give me a guess on hp this motor has..if possible thanks guys..

The 3970010 is the most common SBC block out there. Without some more information about the internals of the engine, it would be impossible to estimate the horsepower of your engine. The factory horsepower for a 350 ranges from like 140 to like 375 :| The head casting number could possibly help and the size of the camshaft is a major factor. The engine has obviously been rebuilt, so its hard to tell what was done to it and what parts were used. To touch on the steel crank ... they were not used in every engine up to '72, just a select few

Have you verified what year your specific engine is :?: There are other casting numbers on the block that will help indentify what year the engine is and what model vehicle the engine came from  Same thing with the heads. There is also a casting number on your crankshaft
