DAMN makes me wish i never got rid of my 79 GP... :| I like your ride and putting in the Pontiac motor is the way to go!. Do you have to get it to pass emissions? That would never pass by our inspectors...

Not since a few years ago. Now it's only '96 (OBDII) and up. Their reasoning is that there isn't much on the road that was made prior to '96 anyway. And thanks for the compliment.

Yeah, they just dropped the IM-240 testing here in NY too. Not worth maintaining the test machines anymore. This after I intentionally let my 83' wagon sit for 3 years waiting for the 25 years exempt clock to run out. I expect even more good news for classic cars now that Cuomo is Governor, as he is a car guy from way back. When I had the 400 in my Malibu I kept it all black, with stock air cleaner, etc, not even chrome valve covers. I too claimed it was a 301. 8)

wish they did that here they just passed testing to vehicle all the way back to 73 once yearly if it doesn't have collector plates. Which i didn't get for my 85 GP....

That sucks! I didn't know Colorado was that strict about it. I wonder about Arizona and New Mexico. I'd like to move back west one day because I'm tired of this cold weather and snow. It's nice to be able to play with your toys comfortably year round.

The one thing I hate about all the after market valve covers I've seen is that they all have push-in oil filler caps. I'd rather have the factory twist-off style. If my stock valve covers aren't beat up they'll be refinished.

The oil pan needs to be replaced because there's a significant dent in it. Looks like I need to price one. The chrome stuff is tempting though because it's cost effective too.

Yeah I like the factory chrome valve covers too, even my 301 sports them. As far as oil pans, the factory 301 pan has a nice baffle in it and fits all Pontiac V-8's. It even fits with the factory windage tray. I forget when it was discontinued, but all you need is the main caps drilled for the 4 little bolts and that 400 never starved for oil in the turns. Not sure if the 455's long stroke would clear the windage tray, I'd have to research that.

I came across a few older sets of the finned aluminum Cal Customs and Holley ones fairly cheap, but good condition too. waiting to get an answer if they still have them or not.

Here's a few sets I came across. I'm really leaning towards the cal Custom set since he only wants $75 for them. The chrome ones have a ding in them according to the owner, so I probably won't bother with them.

The calcustoms ones look pretty cool, I'll be using factory ones when the 400 goes into the lemans. They were on a 69 gto I used to own when I was 19 and always kept after that. This willbe the 3rd car they are on.
