I need a rear end or possibly gears for my 1979 Malibu. I have the stock one that came with the 4.4L. I just recently replaced the 267sb with a 400sb(2 bolt with dart heads) bored .40 over, its pushing about 400 horses and about the same with torque. I kept the stock turbo 350 transmission. Im looking for a good strong rear end but.... im pretty broke i need a nice but cheap solution......... any suggestions?????

LOOK for one out of 83- 87 ss monte carlo they came with 3.42s or 3.73s not all came with posis
Even better yet look for a rear out of grand national or later 442 these cars had 8.5 inch ring gears which are considerably stronger ..

The GN ones don't go for cheap- They're usually posted for a grand give or take. 442 ones can be had for cheaper if they don't have posi, but if they do then they're the same thing as the GN.

If you're looking for cheap, the Monte SS rears are likely your best bet, but they're not any stronger than what you have now. Only difference is some (not all) had posi.

If you're not racing it or regularly beating the tar out of it, yours will probably hold up for a while. I'd say start putting money away now and have it ready for when you do break and need to upgrade.

83/84 MC SS's came with 3:42's and 85-88 came with 3:73's thats what I did my wagon had the lame *ss 2:41's with an open rear and I picked up a rear from a low miles MC SS with 3:73's and a posi over the weekend for 150.00 local I went and pulled it out friday cleaned it all up painted it and put it in my wagon saturday and DAMN what a difference it made it's like driving a totally different car I also swapped in the MC SS rear coils to drop my wagon 1" and love the new look and new found preformance. I say if you arn't building a strip car pick you up a MC SS rear and slap it in there and save the rest of the money for new tires lol cause your gonning to want to smoke off the first set lol

I was using a 7.5 that had moser axles, aburn posi and richmond gears with a 350 chevy with about 400hp and torque, I broke it twice. I kept pulling teeth of the pinion gear. I do still have the axles for this rear.

My 7.5" is handling my 400hp 383 fine so far. 88olds421, what gears were you running? maybe they were loading up the rear too much?

I bought a rear for my malibu..in which i have yet to install it....it came out of of a mid 80's monte ss..the guy at the junk yard said it wasnt posi but limited slip....in which was a little a little better for a street car..I dont know the gear ratio in it though

Posi is just a generic word for limited slip. Each company had their own words for it, but it all boils down to the same thing.

Yeah, Ford was the only ones that called it "Limited Slip", Dodge called it "Sure-Grip", and GM called it "Posi". Good work GM the term stuck.
