Both rears have metal on bottom of housing under ring gear cover,the 7.5 or 7.6 ears are pointed,the 8.5 are more square or rectangular,hope this helps.

Another way to tell them apart is the cover. If the cover is almost a perfect circle than it is an 8.5, if it is somewhat squarish it is a 7.5.
