'80 Olds Cutlass Build Thread

Well thanks to me being a complete idiot this project may turn out to be built off the '79 after all. Turns out that I have managed to misplace the title for my '80 and out of pure laziness on my part I had not yet transferred it into my name yet. In fact I was looking for it so I could go do that this week before I started the actual building.

On the plus side the '79 does seem to be in a bit better shape in some areas than I thought. Some areas where I thought I had significant rust turned out to be just surface stuff that I can easily fix. The few other areas where it is more serious are in areas where I can easily swap parts between the two cars, like the trunk lid. I will have quite a bit of filling to do with the holes left from removing the landau top and the rocker trim etc. There is also a couple very small shallow dents that I will need to work on with the body hammers. A couple I may just be able to push out from the back side. The interior on the '79 is trash so it gives me an excuse to do a much more stripped out interior, get some aluminum body panels in and I think I will use it as an excuse to put in a roll bar as well.

On color I am dead set on the car becoming all black, though I am trying to decide which route I would like to go. What do you guys think a satin black like the JD Blitz Black (which I can get locally for very inexpensively) the other option will be a basic gloss black. What do you guys think?

Can't say I'm too disappointed. Black would be so sinister. While I do like the satin look, it seems to be getting waaay too common. My vote's for gloss even though it's a lot of prep work to come out nice and it's a b*tch to keep clean.

Oh I forgot to mention I picked up a 3rd gen F Body (Firebird) spoiler this last week as well. This week I should be ordering headers and the Jegs crossmember.

OK I have been busy working and with a camping trip but I have also been working on stripping the Olds down (the new '80 I recently picked up that is now the base of the build). Well today I ordered the paint for the car. I will give you hint what it is...

I think you are getting impatient lol. Sadly I have not been able to get as much work done as I had hoped because I have been working more than I intended away from home then had my well go and crap out on me and fixing that swallowed up most of my cash. So lately I have mostly been working on my shop and sorting through my parts trying to get those lined up to go in.

I am impatient. Since I'm spread too thin on my other projects to actually do any work on my own Cutlass, I thought I'd live vicariously through your project for a while.

Ok I am back in the shop again after way to long. For almost a year I have been working on so much family stuff I have not been able to do anything on my cars at all. Last couple days I got back in the shop. I spent 2 days just rearranging and cleaning the shop. I also finally popped the stuck hood on the white diesel.

I am thinking of selling that diesel engine if anyone wants it for a gas conversion. What should I ask on that? Basically from now on if someone sees something in my pics they want and I am not using it shoot me an offer you just might end up with it.

Well this morning for giggles I decided to toss the GTP seats in and see how they fit...and they didn't they are far to wide to even think about modifying them to fit. That is of course for the front seats the rear I am sure I can work with. Guess that will teach me to double check my measurements.

Any way so it looks like I am going to be looking for some new seats for the Cutlass. I would prefer something more performance oriented yet still at least semi comfortable. Something I could easily use with a harness would be good as well in case I decide to take the car around some cones for fun. Looks like I have some digging to do to find what others have done.

damn it those seats were comfortable to.
