BUILD THREAD 81 Buick/Olds Turbo Wagon 02/15/2024 More Parts!

Everything looks great Jim!
But I gotta ask, what/where is that hood from?
It looks plenty intimidating on there!
😀

Jim,
The car is looking absolutely awesome. I'm sure it would be a great candidate for coverage in the G-body Magazine..and worthy of any other car mags out there.

I love how you constructed the hitch...very nice! I see that you cut away a section of the bumper support to clear the hitch.

I'm totally impressed//:notworthy:

Thanks! I think it was from VFN fiberglass, I have to look back in the thread. I love how the hood looks. After the car is in paint and running, I'll be making the ram air functional to the turbo.

Thanks Jack. I plan on doing the tail lights very detailed so maybe it can be used for the magazine. I wish I took more pictures of the hitch, but I was moving so fast it never happened.

I did cut some of the support away, but in the grand scheme of things the hitch is now the bumper support.

I don't think I'll be getting anything done today, but tomorrow I should have the bumper modified and at least the bodywork started.

This car is going to haul *ss and anything else that will fit on the hitch! Lol. AWESOME job on the hitch man 😎
Appreciate it! I dint really plan on hauling much. But when I want to take a road trip, I want to be able to use one of those hitch racks to put my stuff on.

That's okay about pics of the hitch, I won't be fabricating one anyway.

It makes perfect sense about the hitch becoming an integral part of the bumper support.

Ok, had a few days to get some more work done. I think I mentioned the hitch is complete, painted and installed for good. The rear bumper has been narrowed and modified, though I didn't take more pics to show how I did the sides.

Here you can see how I pushed it up, I added metal to the part I cut out so it meets up with the top of the hole. I'll have some pics tomorrow since I should have the rear bumper finished tomorrow.

I have it sticking out about as much as the front. The tailgate is an abandoned idea, that has been sitting for over a year unpainted.

After sanding and filling some imperfections, I sprayed more primer on the front bumper and the tailgate.

I slapped the front bumper on to just get it out of the way. The indents are bigger than the header panel openings, but with the grills in, the indents on the top of the bumper meet the corner of the grill which is the way I wanted it.

Looks great, Jim.
I see you narrowed the rear bumper by cutting the ends and taking the metal from there. That method keeps all the bolt holes in alignment. When I cut the section out of the middle, I had to re-drill some of the bolt holes. Did you extend the bumper ends?

Also, with you having the hitch go thru the bumper, you wouldn't be able to put the license plate pocket there, so I see why you went back to using the tailgate with the stock pocket location.

Will your tailgate come close to the top of the bumper when you lower the gate? That's why I have to shorten the cables on mine.

Man i love that front end!

Thanks Guys! It will really come together with paint, and the grills and the lower spoiler/air damn thingy (I still have to make).

Jack, I pulled about 1.5" from the sides, like you said, keeping the holes intact. That wasn't the main reason though, I kinda wanted the taillights to stay to the outmost portion of the bumper.

As far as extending them, how do you mean (stupid attack here)? The ends are the same length front to rear, but the part that folds around on the front of the bumper end I actually cut a bit and made it a 90 degree angle. I have to grab some pictures. I have added some metal to make the sides taller, to meet with the quarter panel.

Jack, I also didn't really like the filled gate and the plate in the bumper. I have seen different plate pockets, but none really looked good. The more I looked at the gate on the car filled, the more I didn't really like it. I was going to use a drop down plate holder from a 3rd gen Camaro to just cover the hitch hole, not I have to make a plug for it.

The gate just clears the top of the bumper. It was a trade off to be honest. If I went up any higher, I would run into the tailgate clearance issues, and, the hitch hole would be right at the bottom of the bumper. Also, the bumper sides would have been higher than the bottom of the quarter panel, I could have added metal, but this seemed better. And finally, the bumper line pretty much lines up with the lower body line.
