81 Cutlass build thread

I was doing a partial trade for a guy that has a set of 3.42's laying around so I built myself a stainless two piece down pipe. I always wanted to be able to take the exhaust off without taking the AC compressor off and now I can.

All the snow is gone now so I hope I can get it back on the road in the next few weeks or so.

That looks awesome! Can't wait to get my welder set up

Put the car back together yesterday. Also put on the set of 84/85 GN headers I had bought last summer. My test pipe was too long and I have to get it re flared out so its running to exhaust right now. It is suprisingly quiet with no exhaust. Sounds like like and V8 with a mild cam when it idles. Sounds like a jet when the turbo kicks in.

Yep turbo kind of acts like a muffler. Lots of people just run straight pipe after the downpipe without any muffler.

Ive been back dding the cutlass. Gotta get it realigned as it pulls right hard. Small exhaust leak somewhere and something is ticking, not the motor but its over by the horns and sounds like a relay clicking over and over.

Local self service car wash machine was feeling generous and gave me 5 minutes for just a quarter so I washed the fleet and snapped a picture.

BTW, G bodies are so much more comfortable that F bodies. Dont sit so low, easier to get in and out and suspension is softer. Much more spacious too.

After ordering parts from multiple places the rear is finally sorta done. I bought a new, installed, never ran auburn posi carrier from a guy that got a 26 spline instead of 28. Put on my 3.42 gears and found out the dude ordered the wrong series also. Had to get a ring spacer which I didnt want but I wasnt going to spend any more on a series 3 carrier or series 2 gears. Found out my carrier bearing cups were pitted so I had to get those too. Its still not done, needs the crush sleve put in, and seals instaled but the shims are done. I also painted it, boxed the LCAs, and did some stuff for the rear for the drag car.

Cars back on all 4 wheels. Took it for a short drive but the roads were sticky and covered in snow so I couldnt get into the boost at all. At 55MPH the Speedo reads 75 or something spins at 2700 so I need to look into getting the 2004R in it. Its has a slight hum on decel but its hard to tell since I only drove it 3 miles at only 40. Got into the boost once and spun hard even on non snow covered roads. Have to wait until the roads are better to really know.

So now it waits until spring!

Lookin good dude!
I've got some 3.42's and a used posi carrier sitting on my shelf for the wagon.
I'm hoping that I can get them in the car this spring/summer along with a front-end rebuild.

I'll definately be planning a trip out to Rohner's in the spring.
Best to get out there before the weeds and grass get too tall lol...

You have done a great job on this car. Its kind of cool and different with the old carb turbo v6 and the color. When you get the 200-4R in it she will also not only perform pretty well but should get good mpg as well. I keep thinking some tastefully done pin striping maybe with window tinting and chrome exhaust tips might turn it into a real looker.
