I worked for a Buick Dealer and we were able to order our own demos. Many of us drove Regals and when I saw the 301 was no longer available for '81, I started looking into the V6 combinations.
I was able to get a 3.8 with 3.08 gears, whereas the V8's only had 2.41 or so, with no alternative choices. My little 3.8's out ran all the other guy's 4.3 V8's, as well as the bigger 4.1 4 bbl. V6 in subsequent years, which also had no optional axle ratios.
That all ended in '85, when the 5.0 Olds motor came available in a Regal.
Still a dog, but it was all relative in the 80's.

Houston, TX.
My old 1980 Buick Century had a Pontiac 265. 4.3 Litre badges right on the front fenders. I parted that car, and sold the engine/trans quickly.

Yep. I had a 1982 cutlass with a 3.8 V6. It was faster then my buddies 79 Monte Carlo with a 267 V8. Quite pathetic.

Fwiw, I had a 1984 regal 4.1 with a 3.08 Ltd slip, weird car. Also was a limited with the leather 45/45 buckets and non functional half console.

Bought it wrecked, fixed it with spare parts from the garage, sold it to a guy who pulled the 4.1 for a gn and it became a roller for a 383.

It had some scoot though
