'83 Cutlass Cruiser Build Thread

Been debating adding the vinyl woodgrain trim around the car once it's painted. Should I do it?

Blake,
sorry to hear the news...that really blows. You'd think saving the car from Texas hail storms, it would be safe up in the Twin Cities..it's a crapshoot. You can't predict mother nature.

I spoke to Kevin (O.D.Showtime), 3 of their family cars sustained hail damage.

I've never experienced anything larger than dime size hail.

Unfortunate indeed, but it could've been worse...
Eden Prairie (where I am) got the worst of the storm, we had golf ball sized hail at my place.
Within a few miles of me the hail was reported as fist sized... Cars as close as one block away had windows knocked out.
The wagon wears it well though, since the paint is so faded you can hardly see the dents...
But when it's wet the poor thing looks like a ****in golf ball
Luckily it's insured, so we'll see if there's still a chance for an even happier ending...

We had some hail out west but I didnt see any damage on my stuff. Had a few trees down around town and a roof blew off a building downtown. Sad to know the hood is shot. Had a shot of pea to grape size hail and moved past.

Turn it in under that insurance, pick a paint color, lol

yeah, I see what you mean.. :? You also mentioned that your aluminum hood got hammered pretty bad. How did the rest of the car fair? Was the damage mostly topside?

Holy cow, lots of little dents there! 😢

The hood is almost as bad as the roof, but since there's so much paint gone it's really hard to see.
Given how difficult aluminum is to work with and hoods are tough as it is, it's not worth attempting to save.
There's a Cutlass out at the yard I frequent with a perfect aluminum hood I had already planned on snagging next time I'm out there.

The roof is so bad that I'm almost considering putting a full roof skin on it if I can get my hands on a straight one.
The dents are mostly from the door handles up, though every panel got hit.
Luckily my windshield trim came out unharmed. They were the only pieces that did...
The aluminum beltline moldings at the base of all the windows are all ruined, though I was planning on deleting them when I painted the car anyways...
The biggest surprise to me was the dents on the stainless frame around the rear lift glass.
I'm just glad my rear bumper fillers survived.

Man, it sounds worse than it appears on the pic. That's a shame. Do you think it would be less work to re-skin the roof rather than filling it and hitting it with a few coats of (Slick sand) polyester primer? I know there would be a lot of blocking involved.
I'm sure you'll do the right thing. It's still a bummer that it happened in the first place.
