'83 Cutlass Cruiser Build Thread

Been debating adding the vinyl woodgrain trim around the car once it's painted. Should I do it?

Thats great, can't wait to see some progress pics! 😀

Only snapped a couple pics... not much to show, just a gutted interior and some missing trim.

I was relieved that the driprail moldings came off undamaged, I've had them crack in the past since they're so damn long and the aluminum isn't very tough...
The door side moldings were the riveted-on metal kind, not the adhesive-backed vinyl kind so I'll have a few more holes to weld up along with all the roof rack holes.
Not sure how obvious it is in the picture, but the back end of the car came up a lot without all the weight of the interior in it...

Hey Blake,
Good to see that you're starting to get some things done on the wagon. We were just up in your neck of the woods...W.St.Paul.
We helped my niece move back to the Twin Cities from Jacksonville, Fl. Three long days on the road... :? I'm getting too old for this sh*t. Plus I got sick adding to the fun.

You'll have to let me know next time you come for a visit!
The Twin Cities area has it's pros and cons like any other metropolitan area in the country, but I like it here for the most part...
One of the big cons is the coming winter... 🙁 I really need to get a little heater for my garage so I can tinker with stuff over the snowy months.
It'll be nice to have the wagon out at my buddies shop and actually be able to work on it instead of it just sitting in a 40' shipping container all winter...
I figure I have until at least April before the weather will be nice again, so that will be my goal to get some paint on it and get it back to the house.

Yeah, I thought of you while I was up there. I kinda figured you were probably at work, and I didn't have my own transportation..so I would have had to rely on my brother in law, or my niece.
I would have liked to have met you in person. It's always nice to put a face on your correspondence.
I think the day we left was the warmest day in a while...57 for a high. I can't handle the cold anymore...I've become such a wuss. I just couldn't warm up.
The Twin Cities has a lot of character. I would've enjoyed it more had it been warmer.
I'm sure you're not looking forward to the winter months. If you have the car in a nice heated space, you don't dwell on the weather that much. You just keep busy and tinker away. Those little gas heaters really cook the place. I remember renting one.
We were painting one my cars in my friends garage up in NY in the middle of winter. We had the place cooking at 70 degrees.
I'm sure they're not cheap to purchase. There's other heater options out there, but the trick is to not break the bank.
you'll get all the logistics figured out.

I met one of my bro-in-law's neighbors. He was getting ready to put away his '73 Mustang into storage for it's hibernation period.

I just noticed that you changed the hood and header panel. I like the '78 header panel much more. ..good choice.
I hope the hail pocks on the roof will be fairly easy to rectify.

Blake, I want to pick your brain.

I am in need if inner wheel wells for my BOP wagon. The will the Chevy inners fit the Olds fenders that you know of? And is the front bumper filler metal, rubber, one piece? I never got one when I got the header, so I am not sure as to what it looks like out, and the material it is made of.

Thanks

Jim

Hey Jim, unfortunately the Chevy wheel wells won't fit the Olds fenders. Any wagon, sedan or early coupe wheel wells should work, as long as they're from an Olds...

As luck would have it, I just pulled the bumpers off the car yesterday and brought them home...

The filler for the front bumper is made up of five pieces.
The piece in the center of the bumper is metal with two rubber ends, and two rubber fillers on the fenders.

From the back side, you can see how the metal center piece is actually sandwiched inbetween the upper and lower halves of the bumper (yes, it's a 2-piece bumper).
The rubber fillers are pinned to the metal center piece before it is bolted in place.

Here are the rubber pieces...

Hope that helps...

As I mentioned, I did get some work done on the wagon yesterday...

I pulled the rest of the interior out, all that's left is the dash, which will come out next.
There were a few tiny bits of rust under the carpet, but no cause for concern, mostly just a little paint starting to blister around some of the seams where moisture was able to collect.
The worst spot is on the passenger side where the very front of the floor meets the firewall... right along the seam there is surface rust because of this awful pad under the carpet that was soaking wet...
There's no real rot or need for any metal replacement, I'll just clean up what needs attention, strip out all the old dried sealer and give it a fresh coating.
I will have to track down the source of that water leak. It's either around the seal for the heater box, failed sealer on the windshield, or the cracked sealer on the firewall and cowl...
The Texas heat really did a number on all of the sealers, so I'm sure there's plenty of opportunities for water to get in.
I also took off the bumpers and a few more assorted pieces of exterior trim like the roof rack strips and rocker moldings.
Once the car gets a permanent spot inside I'll remove the rest of the trim, seals and glass.
I can't go too far until then because I don't want water or critters getting inside, even though there's nothing really left to make a nest in...

Blake, thank you for that! It sure does help! I have none of the fillers. I had planned on using a glass bumper, so I may have to fabricate fillers since they are like impossible to find around here it seems. The 2 u-pull-its I go too haven't had allot of g-bodies as of late.

For my fenders, I may modify them so they are Olds on the outside, and Buick on the inside. I like the heavy duty Buick inners. I'll know when the holidays pass and I dive into them. Unless I find an olds in the yard before then.

I'll end up back at the boneyard when spring rolls around and should be able to grab anything you might need...
That is if you want yours to be stock... The sky's the limit if you want to get creative. 8)
