My dad had rebuilt the turbo 6 in his 84 t type 3 times. The first time just to freshen it up. The second time because of a spun bearing. And the third time he pulled the engine was because of a bad head gasket resulting in totaled turbo. He put a buick 455 in it from a 76 Electra (i know. Not the best year for the 455's) and dont get me wrong it's awesome to drive especially since im still in high school and it grabs everybody's attention when i pull in (even some teachers) but the posi works only about 10% of the time. Any ideas on what happened to it? Obviously the engine change didnt do it but I'd like to try to figure out why the posi stopped working. It worked fine when he bought the car 4 years ago and has gone downhill since

Since you don't mention it's chattering it must be slipping. If it's an Eaton you probably need new clutch packs. If it's an Auburn they can't be rebuilt. When was the last time the rear end had an oil change?

Not since we've owned it. I told him he should probably start doing them like once a year but he thinks it's fine

I have never understood why transmissions and rear ends get ignored by many but they will change the engine oil routinely. A change of lubrications not only help them last longer it can free up hp and increase fuel mileage.

I would definitely change the oil and add the required posi-trac lube first, that might fix it if the clutches aren't worn.

if the rear end was chattering new oil and the additive (most synthetic rear end oil has the additive in the their oil) might cure the problem but it sounds like it's slipping so I wouldn't bother changing the oil. I'd take out the carrier and repair it as required. If it's an 8.5 Eaton the clutch packs may be hard to find. I know Khan was looking for them so you might want to contact him to see what he came up with.
