I was a freshman in highschool, I was walking between 1st and 2nd period when the first plane hit. Watched the news all of 2nd period, lunch, and 3rd period. My last class of the day was American History, walked in and class began like normal, I finally raised my hand and asked "are we going to watch what's going on right now?" I will never forget that teachers response "It's not relevant to American History." I always knew that teacher was an idiot but he proved it that day.
Prior to those events, I had been thinking about joining the military after graduation. That day solidified my decision. Graduation came, I left for basic the next week. 13.5 weeks of hell later I became a US Marine. A very long story I will keep short, I fell asleep while driving and sheared my hip off upon being ejected from my truck. 3 weeks later I stopped receiving calls and stop getting answers from CO's and points of contact. I received a letter telling me any prior commitment to the USMC I had was now null and void. Have a good life. 12 months later I was able to decently walk again. I was very bitter and angry about all of these events for a long time. But if I had continued, I would not have met my wife or have my son today, so it's hard to stay angry. All I wanted was my chance to serve my country and be the best.
The amount of pride and patriotism I saw come from the events of that day were indescribable. I want those days back. I really hope it does not take another event like that to unify the country again, and if it happened again, I'm unsure if it even would unify the country at this point.
R.I.P. to everyone that perished due to the events of that day and the continued ripples we see today. You, and your actions are not and will not be forgot.
