The air filter box came from the '96 Impala. I modifed the box opening for the air entry to be from behind the headlights. That makes it a true cold air intake. I did have to trim a little metal out of the way to get the box to slide forward some but it was pretty easy.

Thanks!

Any chance of a pic from behind the box?

My donor's box was damaged, but I'm sure I can find one in the yards

I'll go grab one and post it up a little later for you.
Really, it's pretty easy to fit it there.
I grafted a piece of aluminum to cover up the box's original air intake hole and then cut a new hole on the part of the box that's toward the front. Bolts go through the bottom for mounting it and spacers are needed since mounting surface isn't flat. All easy stuff though. Only thing you need is the aluminum tube and the 2 rubber fittings. Those parts are new during my refresh and will be able to tell you where I got them if needed. I redid my radiator hoses too. It might be harder for me to find those part numbers but I'll give it a shot for you if needed as well.

You did a very good job putting the engine bay together. It looks factory and very nice. I can't get enough of your car! I like seeing other things done. As good as a LS engine is, I think a LT1 is a good option for many. Not everything is about high horsepower.

Could not agree more. I was struck by how "factory" the installation looked.

i also agree on the LT1. That's why I am using one for the wagon. Installation parts are very similar to the OE Gen 1 stuff, and it's a cruiser, so it seemed like a good way to get EFI and OD without reinventing the wheel, or dealing with things like oil pan clearance, hood clearance, steering box clearance, mount adapters, and all the little things for an LS install. LS engines have their place, for sure, but for simplicity and horsepower in the low-mid 300s, tough to beat an LT. Plus, they're purtier than an LS

I agree with every thing you are saying. Around here the 500 dollar junkyard 5.3 is now 1000 dollar+. If I had a LT1 laying around I know witch one I would put in my car.

The last LT1 my dad bought was $250 IIRC. Came with a factory harness and ECM and was reported as having around 60k miles. When I cracked it open to do a preventative reseal it was extremely clean and the cylinders and bearings looked great so I didn't doubt the 60k claim. Can't hardly buy a crusty old 305 for that money.

You couldn't find a 350 Chevy around here to save your life. All the yards export them to the Middle East as soon as they come in.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Just took the photos of my air filter box details.

Filter box base. You can see where I used the aluminum patch to cover the stock location of the air inlet. I've installed 2 fittings into that patch. I cut a large section of the box away for the air to enter from the cavity behind the headlights. This is well away from any heated engine compartment air.

One of the fittings is for the purge line from the charcoal canister. There's enough suction in the area under the filter to purge the canister just fine. I never get any smell of gas in my garage.
I did have to relocate the canister from the stock location to the under side of the area where the box mounts.
The other fitting I keep plugged most of the time but I have to use it when I get the car safety inspected annually. Texas requires an annual inspection and the shop that I have it done won't pass it with an open element breather on the valve cover.

This is the breather I use when I have it inspected. When I get home I take it off and put the open element breather back on (shown in my engine photo a few posts back).

Thanks. As you can tell I'm proud of this car. More than I've ever been.

A couple of things of note. I replaced the original injectors at the beginning of this refresh project. They were giving me a little trouble and were getting worse. This shows injectors can be problematic just from age since the miles on this engine are so low. I upgraded to Bosch 3 injectors and I think they are a much better injector. It seemed to make a difference in how well it runs and it idles smoother than it ever did. Until this refresh, I was running the stock exhaust manifolds that came on the 305 with the original cross over to single exhaust. I had also knocked the innards out of the cat and installed a large single pipe back to a Camaro sideways single in dual out muffler. At the time I originally installed the LT1, I changed the rear to a 3.42 posi.

My new setup is with the short headers (D port) and a 2 1/2" dual pipe setup with an X-pipe crossover. Mufflers are long Dynamax Super Hemi Turbos. This new exhaust setup improved the power from the engine tremendously. I'd say it feels similar powered to the Ramjet 350 I have in my '55 Bel Air and it's 350HP with 400 ft-lbs.

Several years ago I took this car to a dragstrip. I turned a 14.60 at 93 mph with the old 15X7 wheels and small sized tires on the back. I'd be interested to see what it would do now. I don't even need to go to the dragstrip since I also upgraded to the Dakota Digital VHX gauge setup. It will give me 0-60 as well.
