A/G body stick shift console

My shifter comes out about the same place yours does and in the Monte SS picture. The T5 out of a Mustang isn't going to fit since the spline is all wrong. Camaro and firebird 1988 started using the T5 WC...

you can tell the difference between the non WC and WC by the bearing cap on the front of the casing

The one on the left looks like a basic frost plug inverted in a non WC....the one on the right is a WC cap...

Well, all that's moot now. I was on a main street 2 blocks from home about to catch 3rd gear when a dumb b*tch in an SUV blows a stop sign while putting on lipstick. So I slam the brakes and go instead to 1rst so hard I break a shift rod! Now I'm dead in the road and all that works is reverse and I must back up 2 blocks to home. So much for the Firebird shifter and console. I have the correct G-body shifter and kit but it puts the stick way over to the left and right up against the dash, 5" forward of what I had. I fitted a 68' Firebird shifter in it's place since it has a 3" offset and places the stick more center, but still close to the dash. The console is just too long to use as is unless I cut the front off. I will fill the holes with metal and see what I can do about it but it doesn't look promising.

See the offset? And how close it is to the dash? That's the stock location but 3" more to the right. I had it back on the tailhousing at the rear of the hole. The console fit well like that. Now it's too close and the front of the console gets jammed up under there. I was wondering about removing the bottom of the dash where the ashtray mounts. I don't use it and the console will fit under the radio, but my buddy said he wouldn't cut the dash when consoles are easier to come by. It appears to be a rivited plate just to mount the ashtray, not structural at all. This will take some imagination. By the way, the floor is done up with POR15. Great stuff.

that sucks about the babe in the suv....you must have slammed that into gear hard to break the shifter rod...

in our circle track car since the driver's seat is almost in the back seat the shifter on the car was way to far forward for the driver to reach so we fabbed a shifter handle so he could shift but if you feel like doing that here's something that may work..

I hit the horn too and barely got a glance from her. Makes you wonder how some people managed to live so long. Too bad I wasn't driving my old 72' Catalina. I could have driven right through her. I like the competition plus because it has stops and I use them to limit the travel. The factory "mystery" shifter was so sloppy it hit my Malibu dash. I've a few sticks but the factory one in the pictures actually angles back better than the Hursts I have. I'll tell better once the seats are in.

if the shifter is sloppy you can find rebuild bushing kits on ebay for about $10...we got lucky one time found a complete new hurst shifter for $40

Now that's a great deal! Yeah, I got the Hurst pit-pack installed on this shifter. Nice and tight. I used the factory 3 speed shifter that came on my Malibu on a Borg-Warner T-16 that came on a 67' Firebird. I keep that around as an emergency spare in case I need to pull the fourspeed for whatever reason. Last time it was a bad sychro causing 3rd to clash.

All done. I like it after all. Too bad I had to hack up a second gen console but I actually like it better now. I removed about 6" from the front and shaved down the pouch area, but I use that to mount my power seat controls anyway.

Thank's Steve. A lot of work, but worth it. See your tach? I also re-zeroed it while everything was apart. One hell of a time getting it perfectly on zero for some reason.
