I believe walmart sells the R12 refrigerant cans also, I say walmart because that's the cheapest route. Just make sure you get a can with the gage on It. You also can buy the gage separate if you wanted and the can, but the combo I think comes out cheaper. Hit up you tube also some people have some good tips for charging your system.

Walmart doesnt sell r-12. Your right take it to a certified A/C shop for R12 systems. Unless you know how to do it. You can find cans of r-12 all day on craigslist, or at least here in AZ. They run about $20 a can.

the freeon also acts as a lubricant so no, the clutch will no engage unless there is a minimal amount in there... if your car needed 2lbs of freeon it would probably need to have almost a pound in it or at least a half to engage

Check the pressure with a gauge. There may be some freon left but not enough to activate the low pressure switch. If that is the case, just adding freon until your working pressure is achieved will get you cold again. If there is no pressure at all, assume there is a leak and then you must use a vacuum pump to draw down the system and see if it holds 30" vacuum for a good hour at least. If it doesn't, then the leak must be found. If it does hold vacuum, cross your fingers and charge the system to specs and see if it lasts. Just because it holds vacuum doesn't mean it will hold positive pressure, and vice-versa.

Your right, was at walmart today and no R12, plenty of cans of R134. I think maybe just bringing it to a certified AC shop and mayby getting It converted from R12 to R134a maybe a option or just have them check the system over and re-fill with R12.
