Tell me if I'm wrong but it seems that not that many guys use AFR heads, compared to other big name cylinder heads. This first dawned on me while watching "Pinks All-Out" and "Pass-Time". These shows often give a preview of what the racers are running before they make a pass. And NOT ONCE have I heard a guy say he is running AFR 23 or 18 degree or whatever heads. It can't be the price anyone who builds a new motor every year can afford the AFR product.
I have been shopping for a good set of heads myself. I really hear good things about AFR. they are cutting edge. But why are so many of the bigger-more serious racers useing "DART" and "BRODIX" and a few of the others? What are you guys running ? And what kind of results have you gotten from a new set of your favorite heads? Fill me in . It may be me but has anyone else thought of this?

Re: ARP heads?

Well this would be completely my opinion here, but for all out racing applications, the DART, WORLD and BRODIX heads are made more for these types of engines. AFR heads are more comparable to Edelbrock performer series heads. I would consider them a street performance cylinder head.

Re: ARP heads?

I'd prolly have to disagree with that. I'd gladly give up my edelbrock heads for some afr's any day. All those names have heads that have smaller runners for the street. The afr's are the hot ticket coming up. They've been around for a little while but not as long as some of the other names. And we all know that a lot of old school hot rodders like to stick with the brands they know.

Re: ARP heads?

I agree with the previous post, AFR is sort of in the middle between Brodix and Edelbrock. They are somewhat affordable but they produce very impressive numbers

Oh, I wasn't saying the Edelbrock's are as good as the AFR heads just comparable in the fact of what type of engine build they are used with.

My uneducated guess is that, out of the box, the AFR heads flow more evenly between the intake and exhaust. Air in/air out. AFR's are more equal than any other brand.

More equal doesn't mean more total flow. Other companies can flow more intake air but not as much exhaust. If you can do your own porting or pay to have it done, then maybe that tips the scales a bit. Take a set of heads that have better intake flow and then improve the exhaust flow and you've got AFR's beat. It takes more money but it you need that last 10 cfm to pickup that last bit of power in the race world.

That would be my guess. For an unported head, you can't honestly beat AFR heads. If you can throw mucho dollars into a set of heads, you'll end up with better flowing heads.

For street use, I wouldn't trade my AFR 190's for any other set of heads out there. Unless, it'd be for a set of the newer AFR Eliminator heads...
