Air Conditioning Fuse Keeps Blowing

If you unplug the connector at the compressor and replace the fuse, can you turn on the a/c without blowing the fuse? I'm wondering if the clutch coil is shorting to ground.

If I unplug the connector at the compressor it still blows the fuse as soon as I switch the ac on. Tracing the green wire at the compressor this leads over to the accumulator pressure cycling switch. I checked the continuity of the green wire from the pressure cycling switch to the compressor and it checked out fine at 0 ohms. The only way I have found that it does not blow the fuse is if I disconnect the connector at the pressure cycling switch. I can then move the HVAC controls to any setting and the fuse does not blow. I did check the pressue cycling switch and it seemed ok with the rough test I did. It showed an open circuit with no pressure applied and 0 ohms with pressure applied. If its not too expensive we are going to try replacing that. Just throwing parts at it right now as not sure how to track down the issue so any other direction to track this down would be appreciated.

Try this: unplug the connectors at the compressor and at the clutch cycling switch. Install a jumper wire across the connector for the clutch cycling switch. Replace the fuse and try it. That will eliminate the pressure switch.

Thanks, I will give this a try.

since the pressure switch seems to be causing the problem I would plug the connector back into the pressure switch and from the back of the connector I would test to see if the connctor is causing the short when plugged in

Just gave this a try and the fuse does not blow with the jumper wire so it seems likely its the pressure switch. Thanks for your help. Once we get the switch and test it out I will post back if this fixed the issue.

Thanks, I will use this as a double check to ensure this is the issue.

Just thought about this....I am not great at electrical and I am probably wrong here but the default for the pressure switch is an open circuit until enough pressure is applied then the connection is made. So if I back probe the connector would I not always see an open circuit until enough pressure is applied?

Never would have thought it was the pressure switch grounding out but I've seen stranger things. Glad it was under the hood. Easy fix.

Hi, just wanted to post back as we finally got the part installed and it works perfect now so it was the pressure switch. Thanks for the help.
