Air Conditioning 'Restification' Advice

The condenser you ordered is likely parallel flow. I wish I had thought to mention that before. The Cutlass condenser I bought, which is aftermarket is parallel flow. I think the manufacturer assumes a R134A retrofit and hence they provide a parallel flow replacement condenser. I don't see this as a negative with R12, it is just a more efficient condenser.

Since you are in one of the hottest climates in the country, have you looked into the optional orifice tubes tailored to those hotter climates? I don't know much about them but saw they were available on Rock Auto.

you guys are lucky you can still use R12. In Ontario it's illegal to put R12 in your car since 2002 and to handle or purchase any refrigerant we are supposed have an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) card. They don't ban R12a here but I know that is not as effective as R12. It seems I'm almost living in California but we don't have a beach on the ocean.

I am using serpentine belt system. I used v6 cutlass condenser with pass side connections. used original hard line and found company called old aire products that had all fittings I needed. hope these pics help you

Where do you get the hoses? They look new and not like the legacy Cutlass design.

Yes. Did find that - went with the GM auto-adjusting one. $20 vs. 80 cents, hahaha. (Don't know where is goes, yet.)

I once had a refrigerant handling license due to HVAC training I had in the Navy. About all it does for me now is guide me to spend money to have systems evacuated, rather than dumping the contents to the polar caps.

so you are the cause of the polar caps melting. Were you responsible for the last ice age to melt as well?

This is interesting. Had not occurred to me that they would be manufactured any differently than the original spec....in fact, I have seen that some claim to be "manufactured to match the exact tube design of the original condenser for a direct replacement fit". This definitely bears looking into, would make it less expensive and fitment would be a non-issue. Thanks!

Edit: the condensors I see listed for Cutlass are still tube and fin...do you have a vendor/part #? I tried 85 Supreme, both V6 and V8

2nd edit: looks like an APDI 7014013 or Murray 7=4013 are Parallel flow...listed for 88 Monte Carlo, 85 Cutlass diesel, 85+ GP and Bonneville, Cutlass various models (but not all?) from 85+ and various Regals from 85+. Odd that some searches show the old fin and tube, but a part # search pulls up all those cars as applications for the newer design.

I ordered hose ends and hoses from oldaireproducts.com. came fast and i had them crimp on one hose end, I cut hose to fit and had local shop crimp on the other ends
I did also go over to 134a

When I was accumulating parts for my a/c upgrade/ retrofit, I purchased the automatic adjusting orifice tube as recommended from my friend. He said it would work more efficiently and run colder. Well, It didn't work in my system, so the guy at the shop ended up installing the standard white one, which I fortunately had in the glovebox. It worked fine after he changed it out. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=668605&cc=1055461&jsn=433
