I went the junkyard and came across a 79 or 80 Grand Am with the aluminum core support. What's the easiest and quickest way to take it off? I tried to get it off but the core support bolts wouldn't budge.. plus i ran out of time and had to get to work so i will be up and early to go get it. I think it also has aluminum drums but would those be worth grabbing too? What other aluminum goodies should i look too on this car?

Pulling the header panel off makes it the easiest.

Whether or not the body mount bolts will budge is another story, sometimes they need help from a torch...

The drums are worth snagging, but you might want to measure them to make sure there's enough meat left incase they need to be turned.

I have only removed one once from a GP, would they be almost the same? Do i have to take off the headlight trim to get more access? I would hate to take off all those parts only to be held off by not having a torch... :x

You'll also have to unbolt the fenders at the core suport. There's two bolts on top, I believe three that hold the plastic inner fenders to the support just behind the head lights, plus the body mounts as mentioned.
If the car still has a radiator/AC then that stuff will need to be disconnected as well along with wiring, etc.

I pulled the fender ones off already so i don't have to pull the fenders or inner fenders off right? What other parts specific to the core support should i also pull? hood latch etc etc. Thanks for your help.

The hood latch can stay if you want/need it, just disconnect the cable. If your yard would charge extra for it, just take it off and re-use yours.

The fenders and inner fenders can stay in place, but pulling the header panel off will make removing the core support much easier.

Aside from the body mounts, and the bolts on the fenders and inner fenders, the only thing left is whatever brackets connect to the header panel. You'll also have to remove the battery tray if the car is so equiped to access the bolts for the inner fender.
No need to remove the radiator unless it's already disconnected/removed, but you will need to cut/disconnect the lines to the condenser if the car is equiped with a/c like mentioned above. Or if the radiator's out, you can just remove it too. You'll also need to cut/remove the headlight wiring harness.
Also don't forget to remove the plastic air-dam underneath if it's still there.

Thanks seems like i'm halfway there. Taking off now to see if i can finish pulling it. Hopefully its still there..... Will post pics if i get it home.

Here is some pics of the core support. Sorry for the crappy pics...

and a pic of the drums that seem to be in good shape i will have to see if they are still good. I got them seeing as they don't have alot of wear from the lining area.

Hopefully i will install the core support and drums soon. 8)

I paid $80 for the support and $30 for the drums with no refund on the drums if out of spec. I think i did ok for what they go for.... How rare are these core supports? I am still debating on installing it or selling it to finance my rebuild. I just don't feel like taking my car completely apart right about now. I guess we will see what happens later.
