Aluminum Core support removal?

I think 12lbs vs 24lb for the steel one. If i am wrong somebody will correct me.

Now you got me wondering about my core support on my Grand Am. I never took a magnet to it and always just assumed it was steel. Maybe mine's aluminum? That would be nice to find out.

Sweet score!!! I would keep it, not that many alum core supports laying around.

"I went the junkyard and came across a 79 or 80 Grand Am "

I hear those 80 Grand Am's were some what rare too.

I sold it a while back.... :| BUT!! My dad's friend has a few cars in his shop he needs to get rid of. Dad said he has two old Pontiacs one of them rear ended. Going tomorrow to see what goodies they have if any......

Just checked the support on my 79 grand am, it's steel. So my question is, why do some have the aluminum support? Is it only 1980 with the aluminum?

Did it have something to do with introducing the car into Nascar? Maybe the car had to have certain options actually installed from the factory in order to be usable in nascar. I saw an old re-run of the Daytona 500 from the very early 1980s and all the drivers were pissed off because one team brought in a Pontiac Lemans. They all claimed it was an illegal car and it had an unfair advantage, he had pole position and led a lot of that race, but did not win. They were saying during the race it was unfair because it had much better aerodynamics with the shape of the nose and the longer back window.

i have seen steel ones on pretty much all of them except the one i pulled. I seen two Grand Am wagons last week and they had steel support and they had v6's.... I still need to go check the cars at my dad's friends.
