Now the interstate is shut down both directions for at least the rest of the week. One direction has about a 24 mile detour through low traffic rural roads.

DOT is bringing in crews to demolish the entire bridge and do a temporary replacement. Not sure what a rush job with 2x 3x 4x OT or whatever it takes costs, or what a new bridge replacement over 100+ feet of interstate costs, but you can be sure it exceeds any insurance policies the driver was covered by.

Bridge shifted 6 feet off its supports...

I'm not sure what all equipment the weigh stations have, but this happened in between a pair of them. It's also a main artery out of the port.

It LOOKS like it was a working tandem bed that inexplicably raised in the air while driving... but how could you not notice that it was raised on an interstate? The air resistance would have to be noticeable.

That looks like the ram unit ripped off, not a jack for the bridge. Also has plant/tree debris on the top although the safety mesh was rolled open.

On a side road I could get it, but on a 70mph zoned interstate?

Happened by us several years ago to a pedestrian bridge. Luckily no one was walking on it. Several people were hurt from flying concrete though.

It's actually not that uncommon to happen. The trucks have a lot alarms that notifies the drive the bed is raised. Many drivers purposely disable them so they don't have to listen to the alarm while dumping and moving forward. This is what happens when there is no alarm. Huge DOT investigation and most likely a fine coming to either the driver, or the company that owns the truck.

The driver should be charged - no one that stupid should be allowed to operate a vehicle on the road. And the owner of the truck should be responsible for the cost of the bridge repair out of his pocket, his kids pockets, etc.

Absolutely intentional ignorance or blatant stupidity on the driver and the owner of the truck. So the driver is driving the truck with the PTO engaged, strike #1. He obviously checks his mirrors about as often as a toddler obeys his mother saying 'don't do that' , strike #2. The wet line system was designed to allow the PTO to be operational while the truck is in motion, strike #3.

Ignorance and incompetence will prevail here and the taxpayers will foot the bill - I'll bet a paycheck on it. We install wet line systems often - new trucks, old trucks, whatever. I refuse to install one that allows the PTO to be engaged above 5mph. Our sales group b*tches about the extra $300 it takes to accomplish to the point that they have actually taken our trucks to a competitor for the $300 savings.

Safety isn't a word, it's a practice.

There is a low railway bridge near Brandon, Manitoba at Kemnay. It has been hit way too many times. There is actually a warning in Metric and US measurements since American drivers can't comprehend the Metric system.

That is impressive! My uncle knocked a box off his truck doing that. He was spreading asphalt and forgot the box was up. He knew he was a dumbass that day. After 30 years of driving an end dump he did that.
