In my opinion, there would be two potentially easy "fixes" for the issue that are relatively easy. One is to increase the thickness of the plastic "washer" where the bolt head goes. This allows more engagement with the cylindrical barrel. The second would be to put a larger radius internal to the cylinder to avoid a sharp corner and stress concentration between the cylinder and washer. It's probably already radiused based on good plastic design, but a larger one wouldn't hurt. Should make the part a lot more durable without changing the look of it as a restoration piece. Should be an easy modification to the tool as well.

I'll be ordering one soon so I can take my NOS one off.

what about installing it with these types of rivets...it will allow the holder move a little if one of the problems is the different rates of expansion and contraction of plastic and metal. We use them in racing when body panels get torn off and the rivet hole is opened up

Sorry but that would not be NOS original correct & your not a GM engineer. There you go thinking way too far outside the box. LOL Allowing expansion & contraction? What are you thinking 😉
GM adhered to tight quality tolerances.

You might think I'm not an engineer but I'm any professional I want to be..
