Fuel smoke means not enough air or two much fuel. I’m going with not enough air.

And we have heat again!

So I guess I'll be getting a filter kit. According to the sticker, this one runs at 6.0psi. Now I can cut this quarter panel off in comfort in a sweatshirt. Last winter this thing turned my uninsulated 30 degree hangar into a 50 degree hangar.

I used mine in our little garage, 24x24, before I insulated. Once I insulated it was too much. The shutoff and start up fumes were too much. It will run for about 3-4 minutes before shutting off on the temp control. They need air flow to keep the fumes, and CO2, in control.

Glad to hear you got it running.

After I responded to your problem I went out to my shop and tried to fire mine up. Was working good a couple days ago. It would not fire. You jinxed me I think? Took the thing apart. Found the internal filter in my pump was plugged up. Cleaned it and all good now.

This thing is old and I have no clue what brand it is? I got it for free a little over ten years ago. The only thing I have had to do to it is clean the same filter and repair the drop cord a couple times.

My hangar is around 900 sq ft, I just crack the door to keep from suffocating myself. The diesel doesn't seem to stink the way the kerosene does. I figured it would have been the opposite.
You might be pleasantly surprised how much less fumes there are after the filter was changed. Both of mine don't make any fuel smells after the first 10 seconds or so. It sounds like yours was running excessively rich for a while before it got bad enough to flame out.
