Only one I took. You cant see it too well, but theres alot pitted metal along the seam, looks to me like lead covered rust

If you just let the Lead drop off the car it likely splattered everywhere. I bought a handful of cheap red shop rags to get the residual lead off. Id examine and clean my floor/work area real good so your not dragging lead thru your house. Especially if you have kids or pets. The spot welds should be easy to see if you got all the lead off. I use a marker to mark spot welds before drilling them out.

I've heard both good and bad from others, but I've used usc all metal with no issues for larger spots such as these. it's just fiberglass resin with aluminum dust. I sanded back down to it when redoing my aluminum bedcover over 10 years later, was good. Had uncovered for a few years over a steel bumper also.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I practiced on the driver side quarter panel, got it off! Around the roof area between quarter glass and B pillar was very tricky, the car was rusted in between the triple layer so it was hard identifying what is what. But for the most part, it was successful! I learned alot, and have some spot weld bits coming for the passenger side, and I will be marking EVERYTHING! No this is not a body shop, and I probably have 10% of the skills some of you have, but I am motivated to learn and I will learn and fix my mistakes along the way.

anybody have good advice on how to peel the roof back without damaging it for the passenger side? Same for the pinch welds.

picture of my GN and the donor car!
Threw the front bumper on and drove it to a nearby auto collision shop, he was the one that gave me the courage to start the project. My passenger rear quarter panel had a HORRIBLE patch done.

If you’re going to do the other seams, pickup a horse hair brush or a non-plastic bristle brush and use that to sort of brush the hot lead off. Just make sure to brush away from you.

I agree. I used a small wisk broom with natural fibers. The metal wire brush acts as a heat sink. The wisk will knock the molten lead right off into your catchcan. You should make something like this to catch the lead. The more you catch the easier to clean it up.

There both gonna be trash after anyway.
Keep at it and reading thru threads like these.

These threads are full of bodywork knowledge. Project oldscool is long but the first 200 pages are full of detailed info for what your getting into. I had no experience in bodywork. I could weld but never anything thinner then 1/8". I was able to replace my floor, wheelhouses, and a few qtr patches. If you got time you should make a build thread to document your progress, keep you motivated and help others later. Good luck.

Do you folks think I could lead solder fill these seems since there’s already lead solder since I’m going from vinyl top to hard or is OEM to just body fill them?
