I understand. I appreciate the pic! Does that bolt going through it connect to the master cylinder rod somehow? I'd probably just modify my A/G body pedals since its possible I just dont have much of an idea of how the connection is intended to look.

Yes, the bolt in the middle is where the master rod attaches. Here's an installed pic:

You don't need to modify the clutch pedal. The rod for the master clutch connects to the pedal the same way and position as the linkage set up..

here's another link that i don't think has been posted yet in this thread...

http://www.monte-list.nu/tech/fivespeed.shtml

That link is in the garage scene site I've referenced a few times (in the pedals section). From what I have read, those who have used the 3rd gen F-body pedals have had to slightly move the pin for the master rod as it doesn't line up quite right.

If you are talking about an A-body pedal, it is completely different and won't work (without modification) due to the geometry.

thank you. A picture speaks a thousand words! this is a good thread. I have the g body pedals (they were from an 81 elky) and I have that hole for the rod which goes to the Z bar, if that is where the heim joint on the end of that master cylinder rod connects to via a bolt, then my options are still open.

is this what the master cylinders look like? ( i searched rockauto.com for a 91 firebird)

it sure seems tiny.

Yes, that is an F-body master cylinder. You can't bolt a hydraulic master cylinder directly to an A-body clutch pedal if that is what you are asking - the geometry is completely wrong.

Here's a pic of an A-body clutch pedal for reference - you can see how different the shape is:

The master cylinder rod comes out of the firewall at a sharp angle, whereas the mechanical clutch rod comes more straight on towards the pedal. You'd have to modify the pedal to accept a master cylinder rod.

Just for clarification - 78-81's were technically "A-body specials". The G-body designation didn't apply until 1982 when the FWD models stole the A-body name.

dangit.

i think this is the pic you meant to post up.

I would have to see the pedals side by side to understand what modification needs to be done (or mount the master cylinder in the car and modify accordingly maybe). Is there any reason we couldnt use a different master cylinder that didnt have the rod coming in at an angle? thats probably more trouble than its worth now that I think about it.

forgot you can't hyperlinks pics directly from that site - go to garage scene and click on pedals - there are pics there.

Here's some pedal comparison pics on this page:

...all this info is in the links I posted on the first page of this thread - take the time to read through them and you will get a better understanding of what parts will and will not work together. If you do your research beforehand, the swap is a breeze... if you don't it can be a nightmare.
