bad headlight switch?

I have a 1980 malibu and when ever i turn the headlight switch on the coil gets really red and starts smoking some. It even melted part of the plastic switch. I take it this unit is defective? I know that it should get hot, but should the coil ever turn fire red?

I possibly have one out of a 79 Cutlass. Don't know if there the same or not. I can dig for it and take a picture if you want.
