Yes the chain stores sell the same kit from permatex.

I was told it doesn't work or match our patterns but I have no actual experience with it

I think it looks great. The SEM texture coat does not look any better, or different than what you already did. It does help to cover up repairs, but you can hardly tell that there was a repair. The SEM texture does not quite match the OEM grain pattern, but still looks better than areas where the grain has been sanded flat.
