ok so here it goes. my new high torque mini starter will not work on my block. heres the issue. i, running a 153 tooth flywheel because i have to in order to fit the factory bellhousing. only problem is my block only has the staggered bolt pattern for the 168 tooth flywheel. so what do i do. csr lists a 153 tooth starter with staggered patter but the thing runs $340 and is a 3 month delivery date. now they do sell the mounting block for their starter as a replacement part. their starter appears to be a standard tilton gear reduction mini starter. my starter is a tilton style. perhaps i could use their mounting block on my starter as it is only $72

I have the CSR starter that has duel holes so it fits both sizes of ring gears..I have the 153. Yours is the same and it lists that it will both sizes.

problem is my block doesnt have the inline holes. my block is only setup with the staggered bolt pattern

in that case I'd drill the block cause as far I know the staggered starters are for a 168 tooth ring gear....it's been done before and if you have a machine shop in your area they most likely have a tool to line up the hole...if not mount the inline pattern starter using the one bolt that lines up, making sure that the aluminum mounting block attached to the mini starter is parallel with the back of the engine block and that the flywheel will mesh with the starter teeth. Center punch, drill and tap 3/8-16.

Drill it! I've done it a couple times. The block will have a boss where the hole needs to be. I did like pontiac gp suggested, bolted it on with one bolt and center punched where the other hole needed to be.

Im confused...your op says you have a flywheel issues...but you are talking about a starter problem...wouldnt the solution be to change the starter to match the flywheel that you have on the engine? Also, cant you change the gear on the starter to match the flywheel tooth count?

my block is only setup for a starter for a 168tooth flywheel (staggered bolt pattern)
im running a factory 4 speed bellhousing which only allows for a 153 tooth flywheel
So i have to use a starter for a 153 tooth flywheel which uses an inline bolt patternt. My block doesnt have the second hole on back of block that i need.

so therefore its a starter/block/flywheel issue lol. i would be running a 168tooth if i could trust me. but i cant.

when you drill it if your going to use GM starter bolts some of the knurling goes into the hole so for about 3/8" into that hole make it a larger diameter..If you look at the holes in the block you'll get the idea

Yea what he said. Drill it thats all you have to do. Been there done that.
