yeah thats why im seriously looking into drilling the block. i would rather not but its looking like the more practical solution.

Also just got off the phone with csr and they say the adapter will fit any tilton style starter. So I don't know what'd be easier to do

It's easy and cheaper to drill and tap the hole, it's only cast iron. Then you don't have to be bothered with adapters. For that adapter did you ask if the stater with the adapter can be used for the 153 ring gear?

Yeah it was stated to be for the 400's with 153 tooth flywheel that ce with staggered pattern only

you can take the front plate off your starter, bolt it in place with the one bolt, use a 3/16 drill and use the plate as a guide. Once you have a pilot hole done you won't need the plate any longer..or you can tape a pencil to the flat face of the block right beside where you need to make the hole and make sure that pencil is straight so you can use that as a visual guide to drill the hole....If I was living close to you I'd be happy to drill it for you, working on the fabrication of aircraft for a decade or two I've drilled a few holes....

well i decided to have some balls this afternoon after work. so i removed my flywheel and clutch, lifted my motor up and removed the cradle and installed the motor on my assembly stand and flipped it over. i bolted the starter on with one bolt. lined it up best i could, put a 3/8 bolt through the hole and hit it with a maul. then i removed the starter. i could see the perfect circle from the 3/8 bolt. i marked it with a center punch and barely drilled the block to have a good indent. then i botled the starter back up put the 5/16 bit through the hole and moved until i felt it fall in to the spot i started to drill. filled it full of Kroil (imo one of the best penetrating and cutting oils) and proceeded to drill while keeping the bit centered in the hole to the best of my ability. then i cleaned it all up and got out a 3/8x 16 tap and went to town in and out in and out until i had it all the way done. then i chucked up a 3/8 bit and marked how deep to counter bore on it. drilled it out then re chased the threads with the tap. starter bolts up just fine. just need a couple shims and everything will be good. motor back on cradle, clutch and flywheel installed again. back where i was but now have a starter bolted on lol. glad i saved my money lol. figured if i screwed it up bad enough i could always run the adapter on the starter anyways but all seems well. thanks guys
