I couldn't find a Bilstein e-mail, so I have no way to send the pics, and I hate phone banks anyway.

Looks like I'll bug tirerack.

I assume it's a date code, which would make the black earlier, which is consistent with my impression of things. But even if I rest on my assumptions, that still doesn't explain the difference in the parts.

I hate these nit-picky situations. I feel like I have short hair parted in the middle, a little mustache, and a bow tie.

Good work digging that up! I didn't consider going to Deutschland.

Meanwhile, I just got this back from tirerack:

“This is nothing to be concerned with. The only difference is the color of the threads. They recently changed suppliers for their piston rods. Bilstein turns them in house from blanks, which why there is a color difference. This will not affect fitment.”

That's a material difference in the piston rods, not just a color difference in the threads. What is the material difference? It isn't fitment I'm concerned about, they obviously fit the same.

I may use your link after all, pontiacgp. They deserve to be bugged about this.

The contact form that pontiacgp linked to is actually part of the Bilstein "Press center" page (read: PR), where I was taken after pressing Submit. Looks like I'm going to get press releases from them. Maybe some useful information too.

Anyway, I just used the form to lodge an inquiry, so I guess I'll find out....
