Is it a complete engine? Are there still good parts in it or on it that you plan on using?
If none of those, then it's worth nothing more than scrap metal.

If the block is truly junk, (bored to max, cracked etc) and I needed it for mock up I would pay absolutely no more than $25-50 for it. If you're hunting for one check the local machine shops and see if they have any laying out back waiting to be hauled off.

I have always just used the engine that I plan to install in the car as my mock up engine and save the time, money and effort of finding a suitable mock up engine.
I suggested the plastic one because they would be nice for mock ups because of their lightweight (not needing a picker to drop it in) and apparently the OP is willing to spend some money just for a mock up engine.(most likely not that much though)
I personally can't justify buying a plastic one unless I planned on using it a bunch of times for oddball BBC installs and Gbody installs are fairly straightforward.
The problem with not using the engine you plan to install is depending what you are mocking up say something like headers you would need the heads you are going to use because of things like raised exhaust ports and varying deck heights etc.

I just can't believe they want $450 for an engine that doesn't do anything. I can't justify spending almost half a grand on a giant piece of plastic.

It's a mock up engine and that is what it does and very well I might add.
Obviously most people can't justify the cost of a replica engine including me but it makes it easier to do mock ups since it only weighs about 20 lbs versus approx. 600 lbs for a BBC.
A lot of custom shops will use them and I have seen many retailers that will also use them in their store or at a show so they can display dress up kits. headers, intakes etc. so you can see how they actually look on an engine plus it is a little easier to haul around than the real thing and since all accessories bolt on when it is fully dressed it looks the part.
For a shop that does this kind of work it pays for itself since it hardly takes any time or effort to R & R, plus if you are doing a bunch of fitting on a car over and over you don't have to worry about maneuvering a heavy weight in place until the real thing is ready.

it does do something, it makes your life easier and saves lots of time...and if you don't pan on using it on other projects you can sell it or rent it out like a friend of mine use to do
