Body Guys - Clearcoat recommendations

The first time my wagon was sprayed they used PPG products from start to finish. After they stripped it to bare metal AGAIN the final base/clear was all Glasurite products.
I’ve been spraying envirobase for about 4 years and waterborne for 9, I’ve never seen a failure like on your wagon. I’m thinking they didn’t get all the water out before they cleared it or something.

I really don’t know any good PPG clears, other than the 2021. I’ve used DC4000 and it was ok but it’s expensive and I think it’s more production oriented. Their envirobase clears are supposed to be pretty good but, I don’t get to use them much. Where I work we use Omni pretty much because it’s cheap and I can get it to lay out.
I would say rm DC5300. I’ve sprayed it in the past and it laid out nice.

Yeah, it was quite a fiasco. The shops been in business for a long time and they have a great reputation. The car was in the booth for at least a day before they sprayed it. I was there taking photos of the guy shooting it that night. Watched him adjust the temps in the booth. I think it was product failure. Once the clear was peeled off the base was sticky, the primer was sticky and the areas that needed a little filler could be scraped off with your finger nails. Of course the paint rep wouldnt admit to an issue on their end.
The shop wound up eating the job. The owner was good about it. He apologized about the whole thing. I tried to be calm about it. The day I was supposed to make the last payment happened to be payday for the guys in the shop. The owner was short. He was using my final payment for his guys. I gave him more than half of what I owed him to cover his guys. After thinking about it that was a dumb thing to do. He could have pushed the car out of the shop and said that was it. Take it home. He didnt seem like a dick so I couldnt be either.
It all worked out.

Yeah sounds like some sort of sealer problem then. The waterborne basecoat really can’t cause lifting, one of the few plus’s of water. It sure came out good after the fiasco.

Saw my name mentioned, really have nothing relevant to today's products, as I don't really spray anymore. I was a fan of PPG's concept a couple decades ago.

Shop I'm at recently switched to Glasurit from Spies. Painters seem OK with it, but like most collision shops, our throughput is mostly production-oriented.

I will say, IMO, a GOOD clear will likely last the rest of most of our lives, since most of us don't use our projects like a new car.

I've never used the Upol clear, but I am a huge fan of their other stuff!

When ever you get a chance (& have some money to spare) pick up a spray bomb of their Clear #1 (UP0796) to give it a try. I've used it for small projects that would be a waste to mix a gun of clear & on some of the hobby cars (models & slot cars.) I'll admit that's not a cheap spray can but well worth it.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it. It’s making my decision somewhat harder though.

I’ve been doing a ton of reading and research these past few days, and had a really good lengthy chat with a painter at one of my customers on Friday afternoon. I’m glad I spoke with him, I learned a lot in that short time about using these new clears since the VOC regulations changed up here.

He made the recommendation to look into something called “glamour” clears over the regular production clears, and mentioned PPG’s EnviroBase line as well like some of you did. Specifically the EC520, 530, and 550 clears. I’ve looked up the tech sheets and watched a couple videos on each, but couldn’t really figure out what the difference is between each, other than maybe flash and dry times. Neither of which will be a concern for what I’m doing.
Anybody know for sure??

I’ll have to look into the pricing for these EC clears with my distributor to see if they’re within my budget, but as of right now I’m leaning towards either these or possibly Upol. I’m just not sure who carries Upol around here yet. I also found a shop that carries De Beers products if anyone has anything positive to say or recommends them?

Specific product lines and numbers are especially helpful guys. Thanks again.
