Bracket for trans and exhaust

Ive got an 87 EC with 305 and 2004R transmission. Can someone tell me the purpose of the bracket that connects the transmission to the exhaust near the converter? :?

Never seen one but probly just to keep the exhaust from moving around and rubbing on something like a wire.

the original catalytic converter was so heavy that bracket was a support for it
