Brother critically ill, prayers appreciated.

I don't know where all y'all are spiritually, but my family could certainly use some prayers right now. My brother was admitted into the ICU last Tuesday after telling a friend he wasn't feeling well. Shortly after he arrived at the ER, he started vomiting blood, which he unfortunately aspirated (inhaled) which caused a domino effect of a whole bunch of other issues. Full disclosure, my brother has been a heavy drinker for the last several decades, and his abuse finally caught up with him. For many years, he covered it up, because he was a ahem..."gifted" salesman (i.e. told a good tale, if you know what I mean). Well, he started abusing his expense reports, and one of his former employers called him out on it, and threatened legal action if he didn't reconcile what he owed them. As far as I know, that matter got resolved.

The sad thing is, he just started a new job a few months ago after being unemployed for about 6-8 months. As of right now, he's in ICU under heavy sedation, and on a respirator. He's really in rough shape. His ammonia levels are elevated, and he has a condition currently called Ileus, which is basically a type of paralysis of the digestive system. Until he can regain some digestive function, and his ammonia levels can come down, they can't go to the next stage of treatment. At this point it could go either way. As of Friday, it was serious enough that they were considering removing the respirator on Sunday and calling in a priest for Last Rites. Thankfully, he improved enough on Saturday that they decided not to "pull the plug" on Sunday.

If you don't have any sympathy for his situation, I totally understand. To be honest, most of his family, and myself included, are mad as hell at him for getting to this stage, and I think we're all of the same mind that if he pulls through and recovers, we're going to have a massive family intervention, and give him a firm talking-to. If any of you are spiritually inclined, any prayers or well-wishes are appreciated. His name is Eric.

Sorry to hear this and I will say a prayer tomorrow for him at mass. It doesn’t matter about the past, let’s think about the future and God willing things will change for the better where you all can celebrate as a family once again 👍

Prayers on the way brother. While it can be hard to have sympathy for someone in a self induced situation, I generally hate to see people suffer. I will also pray that if he gets better, he realizes the error of his ways and takes steps to stop the self destructive behavior and improve his health.

Hi guys. Thanks for all your prayers and well-wishes. Unfortunately, the medical prognosis is getting worse. Per hospital policy, they have to take him off the respirator this coming Thursday. At that point, he will have been on it for two weeks.

I guess the rationale is that the body must learn to self-sustain. If he stays on the respirator too long, the body starts to adapt and expect it, and gets “lazy.” They did a few trials last week where they took him off. The first time, he was able to breathe on his own for more than an hour, but the second time, he could only go for a few minutes. My prayer at this point is for peace for his family, and that his passing be peaceful.

Time for some prayer for you. Hang in there.
