Burnt

Call Majestic Turbo in Waco for an estimate for a 1985 Buick Turbo Rebuild.

Trust me, you can unbolt and bolt the turbo back in yourself. Its not rocket surgery. For $600, you can learn.

Even removing the housings is no big deal. Take cell phone pictures and scribe some lines between the housings and center section to make sure you get the orientation right. I sure there are youtube videos that show how to do this.

With the turbine (cast Iron) and compressor (aluminum) housings off, the center section is totally mail-able. Put in a large ziplock, put it in a box and mail it to a rebuilder for $20 (with $300 insurance).

The center section is the only thing in a turbo that is "rebuild-able". The housings are either "good" or "bad", If the wheels aren't worn/rubbed and the housings aren't gouged/rubbed, they are good and don't need to be replaced. Your boy in Houston didn't replace any of this stuff, so I assume they were good.

Did you say this shop removed the turbo and sent it to someone else to rebuild? That might explain the delay, if this shop is waiting on someone else to rebuild the turbo and send it back to them.

The labor charge on that bill is just to take things apart to remove the turbo, then install it and put things back together. They can't finish if they don't have the turbo.

If that's true, you might want to find out who they sent the turbo to, and get the story from those people.

A turbo shop in Texas like Majestic would have about a 3 day turn around time.

I doubt this shop even balanced it. A turbo shop can completely diassy a turbo in less than 1 hour and build it back in less than one hour, so that would be $150 + parts, maybe $100 more to balance new wheels if the wheels were bad.

The 5 months was not knowing what they were doing and charging $125/hour for unbolting and bolting on parts. Where do I go to get that?

The only charge on the bill is for a rebuilt turbo (under parts), and for removing and installing it (under labor). No labor for the job of rebuilding it. So they must have sent it out to be rebuilt.

True, it says "rebuild turbo," but that's under parts, not labor, so it's poor spelling.

That's optimistic, if they have everything they need to rebuild it sitting on the shelf. I don't know if they would, for a Hot Air turbo these days. New Hot Air turbo parts are available, though, from Turbo International. Made in China parts. That's why you'd need to get the story from the rebuilder.

That is because you can't say "it took 5 hours to rebuild a Turbo" with a straight face, but you can lump it in with parts and rip people off (because you can point to a catalog with "$900 Turbos" and make the customer think he's getting a good deal on a rebuilt one).

They not only rebuild turbos, they sell parts... and I can guarantee they have built more 1985 Buick Turbo's than those clowns in Houston.

The parts charge on the bill for "rebuild turbo" is $662, which is not too bad, from what I've seen.

What are you and me getting into an argument for? Do YOU know what this shop did? I'm just stating what the bill says. My posts were to the OP, trying to clarify what he said the shop did with the turbo.
