this one looks sticky-worthy to me

Vern,

Great post!

Question: Did you use the stock caddy alternator brackets and power steering brackets? I am also looking to drop in a 500
in my monte carlo sometime this summer. I alredy have the motor, just trying to gather up the litle things I may need now(brackets, etc) now.

Thanks,

-James

I used the Cadillac altenator bracket but cut it down with a torch to fit my built up Olds altenator and fit it close to the block so that the belts lined up nicely. Most people probably use the stock Cadillac altenator which if memeory serves me is only 63 amps. I did not want to do this because I was useing electric fans and electric fuel pump and an aftermarket stereo. One of the newer stronger altenators is probably ideal. Yes Cadillac power steering pump & bracket.

Thanks for the tips Vern. I'll ave to try to hunt down these brackets online or at the wrecking yard.

BTW - Nice cars man. Got any pics of your caddy powered Cutlass?

James? The 442 is based off the Cutlass. When you pull up the album its titled Cadillac powered 442, and its in my signature. Take a closer look at the engine pic of the 442 double click it if you need to. Still a little rough in that pic but was coming together. I think I will take it as a compliment as to it looking like it belongs their as opposed to a hack job. 8)

Unfortunately life changes, divorce, the priority being my kids, mortgage, & business I just sold her. Maybe the new owner will post here as I sent him here to look at her pics. I am the original owner of the GN and have it for sale as well. I never advertised the 442 as I did not have her quite ready yet but when he could not afford the GN I mentioned the 442. Basically he came looked rode and said I will take it. Stand up guy has another Olds in his stable. I have enjoyed both cars a lot. Left a lot of hot rodders wondering what just happened in both cars. Odd as it may sound having bought the GN new I think I will miss the 442 more as I had a lot of custom work ideas planning wrenching etc in that car. People & cars guys expected the GN to be fast, the Cutlass and later 442 while sounding great still left em scratching their head in disbelief. Don't get me wrong somebody always has something faster but it did everything well and was just fun.

BTW I added a little to my instruction post.

Vern...thats a damn good job! Looks great!

That was my bad...I should of paid clser attention to the dizzy up at the front of the motor! How much total time did it take you to do the swap? A weekend? Couple of weekends?

Hmnn after the other motor was out I probably had two full weekends in it and three or four evenings. Hard to say exactly as I also fooled with other things like cutting the hood and mounting the scoop changing upper & lower control arms plus exhaust work running a fuel line because I chose to do an intank electric pump etc. Figure you are going to test fit etc and you will likely set it in and take it out about three times till your satisfied. Least thats how it was for me and 3 guys who helped me on & off. Its not real difficult and should not require cutting welding fabricating just best if you can do it without having to rush or be uptight with a deadline. Well outside of I cut & fiberglassed the hampster wheel box but most don't think about it or take the time to do that. Although that was quicker and easier than I expected. I am not a full time mechanic so I am not as fast plus it matters if you have lots of air tools a good lift etc. The gifted could do this fairly quick my bumbling hands have to drop bolts first and then scower the shop floor for them.

Going to let the GN go also. 🙁 Along with a fair amount of GN/442 parts. But who knows if business goes I might buy it back one day. I still think I will come here as there are always lots of gbody noobs and I like to help them with stuff I had to find out the hard way. Especially for the BOPC people as it takes a little more resource help for the noob in the non mainstream. Lots of people never look outside the sbc1 holley 3speed and so have no real point of reference to help, consider, or recommend anything outside that.
