These are pics of my engine, which was done to emulate the way GM installed a 305. It does not have the computer harness, or the cruise control right now. I do not run the computer, and have yet to get the complete cruise setup to make it all work yet. I also do not have the A/C compressor or lines installed either. However, the brackets are all there, including the 2 or 3 used for the alternator. I also will note that the gray hose in the first pic is where I looped both of the oil cooler lines together after it sprung a leak, and the fuel line is not the right one. I have had a hell of a time getting the right fuel line as they all seem to twist when you try to remove them. The white thing on the water neck is a temperature gauge. It screwed right in to the spot normally occupied by the CTS. The A/C hard line (small one) is from a Camaro with a TPI 305. I used it as a part of my adaptation of the dual snorkel air filter base off a 1984 L69 Camaro, and it's A/C hoses and brackets.

thanx. I guess I need to figure out the bolt sizes next. I determined the wire harness routing on the firewall from other photos. I won't have the ECM either and planning on a Q-Jet carb. I have 2 but they need retrofitted for electric choke.

As for HVAC, I am having vent problems and the hot/cold damper is broke on the inside. I may buy and after market system like Vintage Air or something similar.

Most of the bolts are 3/8 UNC (Unified National Coarse) thread. I stripped a 305 of it's bolts to get mine, and found em in the junkyard. They didn't charge for bolts, so I just grabbed a whole bunch.

For the A/C, I would just try to fix what is there. I have the same problem with mine, and will be fixing it after the car is painted. I helped a neighbor install a Classic Air kit and it was much harder than just fixing what is there. Go on Ebay and get a factory service manual set for your car, and use it to troubleshoot the original parts. If you junkyard shop most of it, you should be able to fix it yourself for under $100. Take the money you saved and buy a nitrous kit!

Also notice from the picture that the battery is "Good"..lol Hey, what do you expect for $12.99 at the U pull it? I revel in my engine bay's ugliness and love it for it's low maintenance nature.

Thanks again. I knew about the 3/8 UNC bolts, it's just getting the length right. I have amix of plain hex and washer head bolts. BTW, I found the pics of the brackets I got off a 79 Malibu with the 4.4L V8. I knew I took them, but didn't remember where I had them.
I'll post them when I get around to it.

One more question, how did you mount the steering pump with headers? The AC/Steering bracket at the side (which mount to front of block and exhaust manifold side) will NOT fit with the tube headers.

I have Edelbrock headers and they came with spacers and longer bolts, so everything fit without modification. The spacers are about an inch long, and basically just pieces of pipe. They take up the slack that is there due to the thinner flanges of the headers as compared to stock cast manifolds. So, on that theory, you could measure the thickness of the original manifolds and the thickness of the header flanges, subtract one from the other and then just make a spacer that length out of some tubing with an ID slightly larger than the bolt shaft you are using. Just buy a 4 inch long pipe nipple and cut your spacers out of the unthreaded portion of that to make the necessary spacers. An angle grinder with a cutoff wheel makes quick work of it, but a chop saw makes a cleaner cut. If you want, I will take a picture and post it. Just let me know here if you need it.

Oh, one more suggestion: buy lock washers for the header bolts. Mine came with them, and I never retorqued them in 45k miles, nor did they ever blow a header gasket. Also, if you can run them, the Mr Gasket round port gaskets in their Ultra-Seal line are almost bulletproof. They have only a 1.5 in diameter, so if you are using large port headers you may not want to use them. I am not, and they were similar enough to the original gaskets that I used them when I put my engine back together last year. (Dropped a washer down the intake, and started it....ouch!)
