My present camshaft is a 214/224 .443/.465 on a 112.I've been looking to step up to a larger camshaft and wanted to get some thoughts. I was wondering how much extra torque/HP I can expect with the 282 grind?

Here's the specs-
Crane 282 H06 100082
Chev SB (Hydraulic)
Lift: .470/.470
Adv. Duration: 282/282
Duration @ .050": 226/226
Lobe Center: 106

I like the numbers on this cam. This cam is supposed to have a real strong midrange that I like. Should sound great at idle! I'm not a fan of the new extreme type camshafts. I'd rather make a little less power and have the cam last for awhile. If I wanted a more aggressive lobe I'd go with a roller.

The engine has a holley 300-36 intake, AFB carb, 1 5/8 headers w 2 1/2 exhaust. The car weighs 3100 lbs and I'm running a 4 speed with a 3.42 first gear and a 3.08 rear gear. First gear is equivalent to running a 4.10 ratio.

350 hp @ 5500
400tq @ 4000 with a moderately flat torque curve

I'd say you'd be losing about 10tq but gaining about 25 hp. Also, the new cam most likely moved your peak hp/tq up 500-1000 rpm.

I'm using that same camshaft, its a summit stick, and I love that thing. Makes 380hp/425lb. at the flywheel and has excellent lope through 2.5 flowmaster 40's. I'm a little iffy on using a single pattern cam because my thoughts are is that the exhaust valve should have more duration and life than the intake valve side. Don't know what benefits come with a single pattern camshaft.

Try using camquest. I've monkeyed around with that thing plenty and is actually very informative. Problem is if you step to a larger cam, as already mentioned, you lose torque and gain hp in the curve. WIth your setup I'm assuming your using a sbc 350 with stock heads and flat top pistons, I'd say the lunati 60302 or the XE268H. The thing that makes the XE268H better than the cam you mentioned is that you lose 1 lb. and gain over 12hp. I don't know where you get the idea that the xtreme energy line cams won't last. I've listened to people stand by these camshafts on mopar and chevy forums and everybody loves them, specifically the XE262H and the XE268H.

Thanks for the info! Sorry, I don't care for Comp Cams.

If I was to go with a xtreme type, I'd go with Lunati. I have heard nothing but good things about the Voodoo series that Harold designed. But then again, a roller is the best way to go. I just don't have the money right now. 😢

I don't really either. I've never used one but from what I've heard about valvetrain noise and what not it turned me off. I love that summit stick. It was cheap and it revs all the way to 8k and still climbs like its nothing. If I was going to try a voodoo cam it would be the 60302 that's why I mentioned it.

Why is a roller cam the best way to go? Hydraulic flat tappets will last just as long as a roller cam IMO. I've never had a problem with flat tappets. Rollers just seem to have massive lifts all the time.

I have the Lunati Voodoo in my 355ci.

# Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
# Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227
# Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .468/.489
# LSA/ICL: 112/108
# Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
# RPM Range: 1400-5800

Its a good street cam although I haven't had it dynoed so I dont know exact numbers. I had a Comp XE268 but it was too noisy. The Voodoo is the way to go. 😀

When you say the XE268 was too noisy, are you referring to the valvetrain noise or the exhaust note? I always heard the xe262 and 268 were quite and not that noisy with the exhaust. Does the 60302 lunati have less lope to it?

Valve train noise, I have a video of it. I checked everything I could think of and readjusted those rockers over and over. When I switched to the Voodoo the noise went away. The lope is about the same as the Comp, but it is a little smoother than the Comp.

This is with the XE268:

My 77' TA has a 3:42 first and 3:08 rear just like you. Terrific takeoff and decent highway cruising. The biggest cam I ran with that was the Crane 278, and allready I needed a vacuum can for the power brakes. But the idle was good and it pulled like an ape from 2000 to 6000 rpm. This was in a Pontiac 400 so I can't rev as much, it's a torque monster. The 282 should be a bit stronger with a tad worse idle. I got away with 1000 rpm idle since it's a 4 speed, so you can to.
