so today I was driving and I stopped at a stop light. As I pressed the gas my car felt very weak so I pressed it harder and it was still weak then it died and I had to pull over to the side of the road. After getting pushed to a more out of the way spot I tried to start it and it wouldn't start i could see the fan trying to move but the engine wouldn't turn over there was also smoke coming out of the battery terminal wires. Does any one have any ideas?

Smoking wires almost always means that they are being overworked and are burning themselves or the sheathing.

So, it seems to a combination of two things: electrical problems and whatever made the engine die. My V6 did the same thing when it overheated. Slower, and slower, foot to the floor at 10mph and died.

Might have lost power and spark then. Check all the fuses, wires relating to the starting/charging/ignition system. And any fusible links if you have em.

How long did you try to start it? Were the battery cables smoking immediately upon cranking or after an extended cranking period? And lastly, was it turning over at normal speed? Smoking battery cable causes : bad ground, overworking, worn out cable.

Assuming smoking bettery cables didn't cause the car to quit, you ought to make some basic checks - fuel and spark. How about a little motor/chassis info? Stock electrical system?

Did you run out of gas? Have you been getting crazy good gas mileage lately? Easy to overlook a bad guage.

81 caballero chevy 327 v8 and an accel hei distributer cap are what I know I have. it started to crank over and then stopped and I was getting a jump when it was smoking. It was cranking at normal speed but only for a second or 2 then I went back today the car and it did the same thing.
what does the oil smell like?
It smells normal

that was my first thought because my gauge doesn't work but I added fuel after it broke down and that didn't help.
