Hey guys,
Went out to start my 84 H/O yesterday and it wouldn't start. Was turning over but not starting. I hadn't started it for a couple of weeks and with the cold weather I thought perhaps
a) gasline freeze (even though I'd put Heet in it) or
b) the battery seemed a little drained

All power options working as they should (windows, locks etc.), so first I got some fresh gas. Still turning over but not starting. Next tried to jump start it. Still the same condition: turning over solidly, but not starting. Next I sprayed a little starting fluid into the carb (as you may be able to tell, I have a lot of old cars that don't start sometimes so I do have a method). This would get the car running, but just long enough to run off the starting fluid vapors, nothing more. My initial assumption was that perhaps the fuel pump had gone bad & I went home after a string of expletives.
Then this morning I was thinking about it, and recalled that the previous owner told me that the car had an anti-theft device. I looked through the mountain of paperwork I have with the car and sure enough there was a document on the P.A.T. system manufactured by the Tri-Star Corp. Great I thought, this'll tell me how to use it. It does not. It does explain that it will prevent the car from starting "no matter how many times the thief tries to start your car", and also explains that the system is armed as soon as the ignition is turned off. Sounds like my problem, but the documentation doesn't say how to clear or re-set the P.A.T. system. I do have a little key (for lack of a better term) that the previous owner told me goes into a small hole down by the hood release under the dash for the security system, but that he didn't know how to use it and never tried it.

Does anyone have experience with this P.A.T. system and know how to reset it and or use it? Hoping it's just this and not the fuel pump.

Thanks,

Keith

if the starter fluid got the engine fired up then why would you think the anti theft devise was preventing you from starting it?. Is there any gas in the carb if you pump the accelerator?

On my 85 project I am having a similar set of issues (which aren't bothering me b/c Im not using the car right now) but it basically came down to this: the fusible link is rusty so when it's cold the power accessories all work fine but power never gets to the starter b/c its not grounded well (it is grounded but into rustyness) Also, the power steer / alternator belt has grown old and is a little slack. It needed help of pushing in neutral while jerking the steering wheel back / forth see sawing it today and about the 3rd time I slid the car back into park and jerked the wheel softly I felt the belt come unstuck and power finally went to the starter like it is supposed to and I got in started pumping w/o letting off the key or I could tell it was going to die, it caught and now it all works fine again but I know the belt is no good and will have to be replaced asap. Also, I know the car works fine because it was 57 today but I can tell it wasn't fully vested in the game and as soon as its freezing out again I doubt it will start. So my advice would be push it in neutral while using a lot of turning and then just softly slide it into park suddenly and while one hand turn the steering wheel to the right try to start it immediately with the other. This will not work unless you push the car a lot, like I turned the entire car all the way around thats why it was enough to unjam the alternator belt from being stuck. Of course you might have an entirely different problem anyway just saying what I did to get mine going today lol.

If you're having fusible link problem like me cold temp the car just not going to start. Push it into a garage w/ heat on and try it hours later. You might be surprised to see it start right up, meaning its the same problem I have r now fusible link just too rusty to respond when its cold!

wow...

Stfu. somebody stole my ratchet set or I would have turned it by the pulley a long time ago instead of doing it the wrong way...

Okay well I'm pretty sure it's not the P.A.T. system at this point. My belts are all new to fairly new, no issues there. I have no rust on the car in any of the contact places such as where the negative battery cable is grounded (or anywhere else, it's a clean, low mileage car). Battery is only a few months old. I have 3/4's tank of gas, 1/4 of that is new yesterday the rest is barely 2 weeks old. Not sure of the age of the starter but if the starter was going a jump would have started the car. Same deal with the battery...even if it was dead or low a jump would have started it.
My guess that this point is that it's the fuel pump. The engine turns over fine, just wont start unless the carb has a little juice sprayed on it.

What??? Can I get some of those drugs you are on?

Maybe I could just shoot you a picture of the car running which didn't run earlier - or you could just stfu instead. You can come get whatever you need paying cash like anyone else. I'm not giving a damn thing away for free out here, f-----t.
