REGAL Carb opinion and input request

ok gents. Im looking for some input please. When i first picked up my regal it had an olds 307 with a quadrajet 17086008
Well not knowing much about carbs, but knowing i rebuilt my boat carbs i figured how hard can it be to rebuild. So i found the exact same carb cheap on ebay and bought a rebuild kit. Plan was to rebuild and replace existing,then rebuild old and sell.

Well once i started digging to decode and stuff i figured out my carb was from 1986 for a chevy and computer controlled. Then i heard terms like “pig rich” which i never heard before and realized i have the wrong carbs

To make a long story longer, now i have two carbs i really shouldnt be using and need to buy the correct type. A non ccc compatable with my engine and here is where i would like some input. Should i go early 80’s qjet or late 70’s qjet or holley or what?

The 1979 Q-Jets aren`t computer controlled if you want to go that way. Just get one for an Olds ,Then there are the 600 CFM and Holley 650 Q jet replacement carbs ,Then Edelbrocks as well .It all depends on what you are going to do with the car .And what you are comfortable with/

That was the chevy carb he has. He'd have to hunt down a stock 307 non H/O qjet with CCC.
 
Do you still have all the computer stuff? If not, any qjet from an olds 350/403 will work. Get one from 76-79, those are the best ones to get. Final design of the qjet before all the computer crap. 1705625x, 1705725x,1705825x, and 1705925x would be carbs to watch for. The 1705 is the model of qjet, the M4MC (Modified 4M[OG qjet) with carb mounted Choke, ie hot air, M4ME would be factory electric choke. Olds used hot air until the bitter end). The 5 denotes the division in which the carb was for. 0,1,2= Chevy 3= Cadillac 4= Buick 5= Olds 6,7= Pontiac. The 2 is the 49 state Quadrajet, a 5 would be the Cali Qjet. And the last number can be whatever. It usually means if it was an auto or manual trans car. Even normally means auto (provision on linkage for kickdown cable) and odd normally means manual, but there is little to no correlation to it. An 8 at the end means it's a Checker/Marine carb. Just search into ebay for a carb of your choice and just pick one from there. For example, I have a 17057252 800cfm sittin on my shelf. It's an 800cfm '77 Olds qjet I nabbed off a 403 toronado.
 
Or just go to your local salvage yard and pick through. idk about Flordia prices, but I walked out of my local yard with 2 qjets and an old carter AFB for 75 bucks. AFB was fine, sold it for 100 the next day, sold off one qjet after a rebuild for 150, still have the one, the 17057252 I mentioned previously.

When it comes down to it, it's really a personal preference thing.

Your choices are endless - quadrajet, holley, edelbrock, etc... then talk aluminum body or zinc body, single or dual fuel feed, so on so on.

Quadrajets are typically capable of the best fuel mileage, BUT, also take the most learning to truly get dialed in right. Many of them have been messed with in the past, and a GOOD core is a must. Beyond that, at the age some are, you may be looking at repairing some passages and installing oversized "bushings" to restore factory sizes. Keep in mind fuel expectations in your rebuild - ethanol friendly rebuild kits based on manufacture date and materials, including floats unless you want to run ethanol free gas...

Edelbrock sells carbs that require minimal tuning if you buy the right one new... they all require a tiny bit of tuning even if said ready to run out of the box... but used? Many used models have been "adjusted" to the point of being hard to set back to factory. Mostly won't get as good fuel mileage in a best case scenario, but, not the worst either.

Holley typically gets the worst gas mileage of those big three, but it makes up for it in utter simplicity of rebuilding and tuning.

(Note I omit looking for a Carter, or demon, or... [insert your favorite here])

Usually people wind up getting familiar with one particular type, and because of that comfort, it's what they like to stick with.
 
As a follow up, whatever you do pick, I suggest looking around the 600 cfm range.

I havent had good luck with the S. Florida U-pull its. They dont really have anything that old anymore

Look at Mr. Sony the Q-jet master! I'm impressed! Well done. Anyway check out this site and look up all the Q-jets used by Olds on various models thru '79. http://www.newagemetal.com/pages/Oldsmobile/70-79/index.htm Find something close to your motor and target that. If not at least see what jets and rods you need and swap them into the best carb you can find. I agree the non-CCC Q-jet is the way to go and the jets/rods did not vary that much from motor to motor in those years.
