hey guys,
gonna rebuild my Holley Double Pumper. I want to take it appart and soak it in some solution to break down any gunk.
... what's the best way to go about this? Does any place sell a tub of carb cleaner? ... is varsal a good idea? How long should I soak it for?

also, can someone help me figure out which rebuild kit I need? It's a 750cfm, mechanical secondaries. It does not have a 4corner idle. Has a shaved choke horn with fast idle circuit.

any advice welcome,
thanks,

I will also do my best to take lots of pictures and post a "How To" for knowledge base, for anyone looking to do this in the future.

Re: carb cleaning

Any carb you plan on soaking in cleaner needs to have all plastic and rubber parts removed. If it's a cruddy grease ball then take a paintbrush or toothbrush and some solvent to it first so you don't contaminate the carb cleaner. Then soak it at least overnight and then check it to see if anything is still stuck to it. If so then the small paintbrush will help dislodge it. When clean hit it with a rattle can of carbcleaner to get the passageways blown out. Finish it off by blowing it out with compressed air. I like Permatex's gallon can of carb cleaner because it really gets the metal clean like new and is safe on aluminum, as some cleaners will attack it. Do not get any cleaner in your eyes!

Re: carb cleaning

the carb will be completely disassembled before soaking. It's not very gunky, so likely it won't need much scrubbing. I'll have all plastic/rubber parts removed... plans were to only soak the main body, bowls, and some larger parts.
Will small parts like jets, power valves, idling screws, etc... benefit from a soak? Can I soak the plastic floats?

I definitly plan to spray it down with a can of carb clean after soaking, but what type of solvant can I use for the soak? Will varsal or ascetone be okay? Or will that damage components?

Re: carb cleaning

If it's not too dirty then a couple of rattle cans of cleaner will get it done. But if you are going to dunk it, any REAL parts store will carry a gallon can of cleaner. Acetone is too harsh and dangerous. I swear by the Permatex brand.

Re: carb cleaning

Also you can save the carb cleaner in a big plastic jug with a tight sealing lid. It doesn't go bad, and the dirt will just settle to the bottom. That's why it's a good idea to pre-wash a filthy one first, so the main cleaner stays clean. I keep mine in a heavy duty jug out in my flammables locker at the far end of the yard. GI's will recall having a POL shed somewhere to store flammables, and I follow that advice to this day.
