I had the cat actually come apart on my 86 SS. The honeycombs broke and wedged themselves blocking the flow. There it sat until my wife showed up with the pickup and a tow strap.
 
Make sure the cam on the secondary air valves is intact and the tension on the air valve spring isn't too tight. Too loose and you will get a bog, but too tight isn't good either.
Next time your at the bone yard look and see if they have a pile of Qjets laying around. If so snag a few different sets of metering rods and hangers. They are great for tuning

metering rods are not that expensive to make the quadrajets worthless for others....
 
Why not just do the simple exhaust restriction test with a trusty ole vacuum gauge. easy peasy.
