Catalytic converter question

So we've been blathering about fry pan and brick cats. You never said which one you have. The heat shields on these usually rot at the corners where they bolt to the cat body. The flange is a matter of cutting one off and welding it back on. The question is, why would you want to save one? Are you trying to win a concours car competition? No insult intended, but please describe your goal. If it's just about saving money, replacement cats aren't really expensive these days or I bet we can hook you up with a cheap used one from the sun belt. Thoughts?

I'm not sure about Quebec but in Ontario they have enforcement officers who have more power than the police to pull you over to inspect your engine and exhaust to see if any emission parts have been removed.

Really. Here in Alabama I think they could care less. I dont have a cat on any of my vehicles.

Well i just want to restore my GP with ALL his original parts , willing to do EVERYTHING that is possible to save what i CAN'T find anywhere today... He was born with a fry pan, he'll carry on with a fry pan! LOL...Anyway i HATE the looks of the brick one (yeah i know it's UNDER the car..but it still really counts for me when i gotta go over there! LOL!) If i can replace the heat shield and the flange, then LETS GO i'll do it!!

It's against federal law to disable any of your low emission parts in the USA. Here in NJ, when you go to get inspected they have a camera in the floor to check to see if the cat is still there. No cat = no pass. In NJ there is no age cutoff for emission inspections.

My friends 87' cadillac with a 307 passed the sniffer without a cat, quite funny. The older cars must not be held to as high of a standard. I'd gut it or make a delete pipe.

Here in NY, if your car is over 25 years of age you don't need one. I have true duals on my 79 GP, no cats.

the car is exempt from testing but federals laws state you have to have one if the car came with one
