when you change the timing chain in a chev and line up the to dots it is set for tdc on the no.6 on a v8 because that is the valve timing, not the ign timing. before you put the dist back in bring to around to tdc on the no.1 cylinder otherwise you won't have much power and it will be hard starting. they don't tell you this in the directions just letting you know, might save a little time.
 
I've wondered why they don't put the timing mark on the cam to be @ tdc compression stroke on #1cyl. Yes. #1 and #6 will be at TDC. When you align the gears "dot to dot", be aware that #6 will be at TDC on the compression stroke and #1 will be at TDC on the exhaust stroke. Install distributor accordingly.
