Hello, I am needing some advice on painting my frame. I pulled the engine and trans recently, so i figured i would clean up the engine bay. I have cleaned the frame and suspension components with a wire wheel.. I am looking for advice on what paint to use on the frame.. Anybody use Rustoleum enamel paint?? I know Por 15 works way better but i am limited on $$$. I am looking for a budget way to do this. What color should i use satin, gloss,or flat black?? Or is there a better paint to use? I would prefer to roll it on seeing that my compressor is a piece of CRAP!
Thanks for any info..
I want to hurry up and get this done so i can put my car back together.
get a better compressor or borrow one and just use omni gloss black. 8) That holds up the best. I guess I'm just but picky but i won't spray paint anything on my car. Rattle can paint seams like it take 5 years to fully harden and even then it seams to peel off easily. A friend of mine just had his frame powder coated and I'm glad I saw it before I wasted the money on mine. The powder coating didn't really hold up any better than the paint. It still chipped very easily and scratched easy. We had to grind has frame in a couple spot due to clearance issues. When we did that some of the hot metal burned right through the powder coat because we didn't cover it properly. We touched it up with color matched ppg paint and it looks just as good and is a whole lot cheaper. 😀 just my .02

the best picks i have of his frame

I will say it all depends on how you plan to use the car. For shows, painting it like you would the top of the car (or powdercoating it) is best. For a driver in the rust belt, a heavy duty coating like POR 15 would be good. For someone who is just trying to make a driver look better than it was that does not see road salt, spray paint is fine. I spray painted mine when I stripped the car back to the firewall for the swap in 1997, and it has held up pretty well. Sure, there are some chips and scratches here and there, but the car was pressed immediately into pizza delivery after it was running. In fact, after the catalytic converter was hooked up at the exhaust shop, I drove the car across the street and immediately went to work delivering with it! Now that the car is finally painted, I am dismantling the front end again to spray paint it some more. Will it be perfect? No. Will I be afraid to drive it cross country for fear of messing it up once it is done? No once again. It's just like a normal car...only faster.
