def something to ponder... would like to have it in color for awhile though....

Darin, if you've got the compressor and an HVLP gun, you are already ahead of the game. I'd highly recommend just going with PPG Shopline Single Stage or Dupont Nason over using Rustoleum. It will dry MUCH faster, it will look better, it will last longer, it's easier to work with, and its formulated specifically for automobiles. Also you can get it in whatever color you want. The prep work is almost exactly the same too.

Looks like I'll have some homework to do, and jump into some research... You guys have given me some things to think about. I really do appreciate the suggestions, and will look into price/color/availability, and time I have to work with.

Darin,
These guys have pretty much put it in a nutshell. Shooting the car in Rustoleum, I feel. would be counterproductive. The fact that you'd have to strip it all off and start from scratch.
I like what Doug suggested about shooting it in Epoxy primer. That's if you don't plan to paint the car right away. It will buy you some time before you're ready to give it a proper finish coat.

I'm still wrestling with the decision, but I think I'll be puttting off the rust-oleum job for now... I've been doing some searching, and I actually bought some of the Duplicolor paintshop paint a long while back, and was thinking about using that, but have found that the mineral gray that I have is no longer available, even on fleabay.... I don't believe that 3 qts will do the car, even if I do the center of the hood silver, so the search is on for an alternative... I believe I may be leaning towards the eastwood primer deal, but hate to leave a car so long without a topcoat, especially since the car will be sleeping in the elements... thinking about this for the final color, may change as time goes by, and end up with it on the Regal...

You could do what my new neighbor across the street did when I was a kid, he painted his whole van in an afternoon with a roller.

Did that to an old 68 Dodge van came out good too!!

The purpose of epoxy primer is that its a bare metal sealer,it's as good as paint. That's the whole reason I did it to my project.

I'm def not a body & paint guy (I'll leave that to my brother in Cali), so I guess I'm still in the frame of thought, that you can't leave primer by itself because it'll rust back up.... guess I have to stop thinking old school....
