Hey guys...so i needed to purchase a cheap vehicle to get to and from work and i found a cheap 84 GPrix for sale locally.....everything seemed to work fine with the car....took it to the shop and got a new carb as well as the timing fixed.....So i've had the car about 2 weeks now and was finally able to take it out on the freeway.....hit about 55 and the car bogged so i pulled off the freeway and i hit about 20-25.....once i hit the low speed my car just died with smoke coming from up under the hood.....I got the car towed back to the shop and they told me the guy that put the car together removed a part of the engine that would keep the carb warm and that its currently freezing.....I dont know like anything about old schools and i was wondering if anyone knew what i could to try to get the thing running again??

try buyin another carb and see if that works

the guy i bought the car from...prob should've done some research on this but it seemed like a good price for the car...foolish...but changed the plugs today and got the car running a little bit.....itll start and move around but every 100 or so ft the car dies...i dunno what to do...

You must be living somewhere up North cause here in the south we can scrap that junk without our carbs freezing lol. As far as keeping the carb warm, the only thing I can think of is the factory put a shield around the factory exhaust manifold, and an aluminum foil type hose would run from that up to the bottom of the air cleaner. The idea is that the shield around the manifold would heat up and the heated air would be sucked up through the hose and into the air cleaner, therefore providing constant warm air in cold climates. Also you need to just kinda go through that motor and just check the basics. When I traded a broken dirt bike for my malibu 4 years ago when it was a dead car, I learned real quick that the owners most of the time did not take care of those cars. So you might end up replacing the motor.

I am guessing that it is the thermostatic air cleaner system. That will allow warm air coming off of the exhaust manifold to go into the air cleaner when it is cold outside. Does it have a regular open element air cleaner on it now?

Is this doing it with the engine warmed up?

i know on 3.8 buick V6's there is a plate that sits between the carb and the intake. it heats up the incoming air/fuel mixture.

this MAY be what he's refering to but i doubt it since i removed mine and havent had any problems with it.

but yeah the stock air cleaner SHOULD have a flexible tube that run from the exhaust to the underside of the snorkel on the air cleaner. i know when i made that functional again the engine ran warmer during winter months.

i wouldnt say i live in the north but such things are noticeable if they arent working correctly or at all.

aside from this i have no idea what else they're talking about.

i know people tend to remove the stock air cleaner thinking an open element air cleaner improves HP but it doesnt, especially if the engine is still run by the computer.

Weird I live in Massachusetts and my carb has no choke on it. Even in the very cold weather I just let it warm up for 4 minutes and have no problems.

I would check the floats in yours, they might be sticking. I had a 1986 full size Chevy 4x4 pickup with a 400 small block in it and if I got real hard on the peddle it would drain the bowls so fast the carb would get stuck.

Just something you could look into. Could be gummed up too or the float level could be too low.
