Good morning,

Just curious if any has used clutch type cooling fan set up? If so, what set up did you use and how did it work for you.

Thanks, David

Standard rotation accessory drive 'standard-duty' fan clutch set-ups work for most stock applications. The options beyond that are thermal/non-thermal & then stepping up to heavier duty clutch units (the HD units found in trucks/service vehicle apps). I used the HD thermal set-ups on both my dually & 3/4 ton trucks (both severe duty/reverse rotation set-ups). The Malibu (305/th350) was just a standard rotation/standard-duty Murray clutch fan set-up. If your motor has some upgrades & is making more power (> power = > heat), the HD units make sense.

The clutch set-ups free spin when starting or running cool & then lock-up once they're needed as temps increase (when working correctly).

I also had room within the shrouds on both of my trucks to increase the actual fan diameters so I did that. I'll be doing the same on the Malibu once I reassemble the front clip pieces.

I use the clutch fans on all my cars. Replaced fans on 2 of my previous cars with clutch fans, and just put a clutch fan back on the SS in place of the electric fans that were on it.

I'm currently using a 7-blade SS fan and HD clutch. It works just fine. I have an F-body LS1 dual fan setup in case I decide to go electric. So far no need for it.

Thanks for all replies. I forgot one import piece of information..... This is for a LS engine. I have no problem with electric fans, just wonder if anyone was able to use a clutch type fan. What set up did you use?

Ah, you have left out that simple fact. I think in the case of utilizing an LS engine, I think I would go with the electric fan setup. Modern engine, up to date cooling system.
