Gentlemen,
Thank you very much for the information and corresponding links. I knew an adapter/ pigtail was also needed. I appreciate the input.

This is definitely a must do upgrade for me especially after doing my fan swap. I barely have 8v after the fans kick on
So the amp rating is stamped ? Is there any other options i should look for on the vehicle that would indicate it has the 140amp alternator? I am going to try to get one from the salvage yard.

Mine was never that low but I remember when I hooked up the Cyberdyne digital volt meter I would have around 14v at cruise and in town until the dual electric fans kicked in. You could then watch the volts slowly drop. If I stayed in town too long they would get down to 11v or so.

i Bought a stock replacement alt from Autozone and it took a crap after 1year. So i replaced it with one that came from a engine my buddy gave me. It worked ok for a while and now its probably on its way out so maybe plus my battery is pretty old so maybe that's why i goes down so low. I am probably picking up a Optima battery and a with a upgraded alt it should solve my issues. 8)

If you find the SPID label, look for option code "KG9" that will signify 140amp.

Thanks i will look for that when i go hunting for one. I will look for the newest, shiniest one. I priced one from Napa really quick and they are $139 with a 60 dollar core. So if i don't find one that looks new and passes after i test it then i will just buy one.

Just picked up a rebuilt alternator at the salvage yard for 20 bucks. How would i know if its a a 105 or 140 amps? The label on the caprice i pulled it out of had the KG9 code but it isn't original to the car. the alternator had a label but it was too faded to tell me how many amps it is. Is there any physical differences between the alternators to tell the apart. The auto parts stores couldn't tell me how many amps it is just if it is good or not. Do i have to upgrade the charge wire to the battery?

On the older alternators it was usually stamped in the case on the back somwhere.

Yes, it would be a good idea. I ran an 8ga wire on mine.

I have looked on the case and didn't see anything.. i was going to try to borrow a friends ampmeter and see if it would tell me..either way it will be better than the stock one
